Bad boss design can be a matter of opinion. Maybe your skills just weren't good enough to beat the boss. Maybe you were eating a slice of pizza while fighting the boss and got distracted. Every once in a while, there is an example of boss design so poor that it makes one wonder what the developers were smoking that day. This is one of them.
Much as in the film, the final level of the PSX game Star Wars: Episode 1-The Phantom Menace involves Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn infiltrating the Theed Palace on Naboo to confront Dark Jedi Apprentice Darth Maul.
The boss battle against Darth Maul is somewhat challenging and as I knocked his health down to zero, I was shocked to see Darth Maul lying on the bridge near a pit delivering a repeated death moan. I tried using the Force Push to knock him off the ledge. Nothing happened. I tried swinging my lightsaber over his moaning corpse to trigger some sort of final cutscene. Nothing again.
It turns out the only way to finish off Darth Maul is to use a thermal detonator on him, which is weird for a few reasons--it didn't happen in the movie and the game never prompts you to do this. It didn't help that I didn't have any thermal detonators in my inventory either...
