Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #202 - Devil's Dance

   0

Featuring Final Fantasy VI and funk / disco.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

after 8 and 7, we continue our countdown with Final Fantasy VI from 1994. And we take the opportunity to meet an old acquainance: The theme "Devil's Lab", a rhythmic industrial song that plays in the magitec factory where Espers are drained of their powers.

A long time ago I already made an outtake entry regarding Devil's Lab.

Now that I have more info, I'd like to get more specific: I have indicators that the song was inspired by songs from the funk/disco genre. First the original sample for convenience:

The first part of the song has a curvature pretty similar to a recurring sample from the very first song on Funkadelics very first album.

Funkadelic - "Mommy, What's A Funkadelic" (1970):

Now for the second part of the song starting at 0:42 with a sample by Chaka Khan and Rick James. This one is especially interesting because it also has the "one-two . one-one-two" rhythm of Devil's Lab:

Chaka Khan - "Slow Dancin' (feat. Rick James)" (1982):

Then I can offer the backing from a song by Funkadelic's sister act Parliament:

Parliament - "Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication (The Bumps Bump)" (1975):

Magazine 60 - "Florida Mix (Maxi D J US Special Remix)" (1986):

Nevertheless, I'd like to add an oddball to these samples:

The song "Dancing with my Shadow" by big band leader Henry King from 1934 which, appropriately, is still dance music, so the history of this sequence might go much deeper:

Mozart K289:

Next: More Final Fantasy!

Phil out.
