Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #183 - Marching Force

Featuring Shining Force (MD) and marching music.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

after some delays, finally the promised Sega entry. We'll start with one of the major franchises of the Mega Drive / Genesis era, Shining Force. A turn-based strategy role-playing video game it could be considered as Segas answer to the Fire Emblem series which, at the time, was only available in Japan so for many westerners it was basically the entry into the genre. Today's entry is the first in the series, "Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention" (1992) which was itself a sequel to "Shining in the Darkness" (1991) that was still a dungeon crawler RPG comparable to Wizardry. One of the more prominent themes of the game is the world map theme which, as with many RPGs, has the habit of being interrupted by countless sudden encounters:

I think that the sample is rooted in military marching music and music inspired by it which, given the war theme of the game, is not a very far fetch. Some examples:

Joseph Olivadoti - "We're the Navy" (1943):

Eduardo Boccalari - "Il Bersagliere" (The Italian Rifleman) (1908):

Elizabeth Spencer - "Where The Morning Glories Grow" (1917):

Aleksander Dulin - "March of the Polish Fleet" (1945?):

Some of the samples may sound familiar for you. This is not a coincidence. They also appear in my article for Final Fantasy VIs "Aria di Mezzo Caraterre" which has a suprisingly similar curvature to this sample.

Some more Shining Force next week? We'll see.

Phil out.
