Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #127 - International Circus Zone

Featuring Sonic 3 and old circus music.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

today's topic is a song that has been analyzed by a lot of people already: Carnival Night Zone from 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3. But because I found some new information about it that I think hasn't made its way around the web yet, I decided to have my own take on it:

The first part of the main jingle that starts on 0:04 is, as many people should have noticed, very likely based on Julius Fučíks "Entry of the Gladiators" from 1897, one of the most stereotypical circus songs of all time:

The second part of the main section that starts at 0:08 is apparently less known, at least I didn't find it in the article from Sonicretro. However, I managed to find some songs from the beginning of the 19th century that have some samples that come pretty close to the ones in Carnival Night Zone:

My best sample so far is from 1902 from the song "National Emblem March" composed by Edwin Eugene Bagley. Here in a version from 1908 by Arthur Pryor Band:

My second best sample is from John Stromberg and his 1900 song "Ma Blushin' Rosie", here in a recording by A. H. Dudley from 1902:

These songs were from the days when the circus was at the peak of its popularity and many popular songs from the era were adapted for the manege, so it is not a miracle that one could find such a sample there.

The last sample at 0:63 before it loops has, of course, been identified by many people as sounding similar to a sample from Michael Jackson's 1991 song "Jam".

For everyone who hasn't heard yet, Michael Jackson was rumored to have worked on the soundtrack for Sonic 3:

Sunday another Chrono Cross outtake round!

Phil out.
