Featuring Super Mario 3 and Celtic Frost.
Greetings fellow game music lovers,
until now, most of the Kondo music we have examined fell into one of the following two categories:
1) Happy 60s jazz song.
2) Happy 60s rock song.
(possibly reused 20 years later by the japanese city pop genre). ;)
However, even in the family-friendly franchise that is Mario occasionally the componist has to choose something more "edgy" as to convey the imminent danger posed by the army of a 10 foot fire breathing turtle spike monster. Thus, the song played in Super Mario 3 boss battles sounds less like Tammi Terrel doing backflips on the dancefloor and more like Satan blowing into Dracula's organ pipes:
Consequently, the following finding is from one of the harder genres of music, more specifically thrash metal. This is the song "Suicidal Winds" by the Swiss extreme metal band Celtic Frost from 1985:
They also use it in several of their other songs ( I think "Babylon Fell" and "Into the Crypt Of Rays" ).
Some people have compared it to Metallicas "Master of Puppets", so it might be a thrash metal stock rhythm, I'll keep you updated if I find more.
