Featuring Super Mario World and Bluegrass.
Greetings fellow game music lovers,
for today's entry, I decided to have another look at the Overworld music of the first Mario game on the Super Nes, Super Mario World (1990):
According to the legend, when Miyamoto asked Kondo to write the Super Mario Bros. music, he brought over a stack of his favourite Bluegrass records and due to their mutual tastes Kondo decided to roll with it.
This trend continued in Super Mario 3 ( as listening to the second overworld music should convince you fast ) and Super Mario World is no exception as well. So I decided to hear a large amount of country music and see if I could find something that reminds me of the Super Mario World main theme. Here are my results so far:
1) The Association - Stop Your Motor (1971):
2) New Riders Of The Purple Sage - Sutter's Mill (1972):
Note: Their 1973 song "Take It Red" had a structurally similar sequence:
3 ) Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Dixie Hoedown ( 1974 ):
There are several more songs that have similar structures but that are less obvious, so I let them out for now.
Due to the large amount of similar material I assume that the jingle is a country music standard and thus a testament to Kondos enormous musical knowledge.
Sunday more Megaman.
Ok, I might have finally found the ur-example. The song "Raise A Ruckus Tonight" which can be traced back to an 18th century US folk song:
