today's topic is the music to the fourth Sigma stage in the original Mega Man X game (1993). This short, vertical stage features an eerie tune consisting entirely of a series of descending notes that provides the emotional setup for the upcoming confrontation with the seemingly immortal Wily expy:
The significant use of synthesizers here and throughout the soundtrack as a whole provides an incentive to have a look at a genre that consists dominantly of such a set-up: 80s Synth Pop. One of the leading groups in that genre, Men Without Hats, provides a short tune called "Ban The Game" (1982) which has a surprisingly similar set of descending notes:
