Phils Game Music Similarities #37 - The Secret Sounds Of The Rudra

   0

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

today's entry is about one of the more exotic entries in Squares RPG library, a japanese-only game for the Super Famicom released in 1996 at the end of the era of said console. It features a ragtag bunch of adventurers trying to prevent a recurring planet-wide apocalypse staged by a cult of wannabe-gods wielding the powers of mystical demonic beings only known as "The Rudras". It is a solid game with an innovative magic system where you can literally compose your own spells from human readable charactersets ( japanese character sets, that is ). The game has subsequently been translated to english by Aeon Genesis translations.

The soundtrack has been created by one of the lesser known composers of Square, Ryuji Sasai of SaGa and Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest fame. As many soundracks of the time, it consists mostly of 70s/80s hard and prog rock. The first song in the admittedly extensive playlist is "The Quest for Rudra's Mines" which plays during the games intro. It feels like an amalgamation of many other prog rock songs from the era. For one of these subsections

I found a sample in the song "The Search" by the prog rock band Cathedral from their 1978 album "Stained Glass Window" which gives me a lot of related vibes:

Btw, what was the secret of the Rudras anyways? The problem with apocalypses is that they are kinda hard to hide.

Phil out
