LONG BLOG

Band of Bloggers - April 2019

   0

This month’s theme may make you uncomfortable.

Not in like a gross way or anything. Just sort of slightly uncomfortable. Like stepping into a small bit of water and now your sock is slightly damp kind of uncomfortable. Like the room’s temperature being just a degree or two above comfortable temperature. Uncomfortable in the sort of being left alone in a room with a friend of a friend that you’ve met maybe once or twice and never really spoken to before kind of way.

Yes, for this month’s theme I am asking you to Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone. What does this mean? Basically what I want you to do is play something that you might have overlooked because it doesn’t really fit into what you normally play. I want you to look at a game that looks interesting to you, but because it doesn’t fall into the genre(s) that you normally lean toward you’ve yet to actually play it.

Now my reasoning behind this is fairly simple. I went through a time in my life when I really didn’t play any games that didn’t remind me of game I already liked. Same with movies and books. I had my “preferences” that I stuck by and believed were set in stone. I didn’t stray outside my comfort zone often. And when I did I usually considered things as an exception that proved the rule.

As I got older I realizes that this line of thinking, at least as it pertained to me personally, was bullshit. Utter. Bullshit. Because the more I explored things outside my comfort zone the more stuff I fell in love with. If I hadn’t gone outside my comfort zone when it came to the media I enjoy I would have missed out on a lot of cool stuff. I used to be dead set against first-person shooters, and had I stayed in that mindset I would have never experienced DOOM (2016), a game I wholeheartedly love. And that’s just one example of discovering games I normally looked over because they didn’t line up with what I already liked.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOM

So yeah, for this month I want you to play a game that doesn’t really fit into your usual preferences. For example, maybe you’ve never really tried a horror game before. Well, do it. Find a horror game that seems interesting or one that you know is loved by people that do play them and give it a shot. Maybe you’ll like it. Maybe you won’t. But unless you try it you’ll never really know, will you?

If you do decide to participate in this month’s prompt remember to include BoB or Band of Bloggers in your blog title. We’re also always looking for fresh blood, oh, and also more people to join our merry Band of Bloggers. So if you’re interested in joining in leave a comment below.

Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy this month’s prompts and the games it inspires you to play. Have a great April and happy gaming!

Super Mario Bros. 3 was the very first game (I remember) playing. Since then I have been a big fan of the medium.

I'm an avid gamer and aspiring writer. RPGs and platformers are my bread and butter, but I'm also a fair action/adventure guy too. Really there are no genres I outright dislike, just individual games. Every game genre offers something different, and I've come to love the variety. I feel the same way with comics, movies, manga, etc. Not really hung up on "genres", I just like what I like, and I don't care what genre it is.

Recently I've been trying to "break out of my shell" by getting out of my comfort zone and trying things I normally would not. Because of this I have discovered lots of new games, books, manga, shows, and movies that I now love. I do my part now to try to help others expand their horizons and get out of their own familiar space and try new things.

Destructoid has been a big help in getting me to broaden my horizons, and interact with more people outside my familiar circle of friends and acquaintances. I've come to love this site, and look forward to sharing more with you knuckleheads.
