Good evening everyone,
after the first three entries have been all Nintendo, I think it is about time we come to a Sega game.
It has been a well known fact in the games community that the songs of the first two Sonic games on the Sega Genesis were prominently composed by the japanese jazz / R&B band "Dreams Come True". The level music from "Starlight Zone" for example has often been compared to their song "Kusuriyubi no Kesshin" while the last boss song from Sonic 2 reminded many of their later song "Yasashii Kiss wo Shite".
Tonights example is a certain section of the music for the level "Labyrinth Zone" from Sonic the Hedgehog 1. It has been said, that the song already has a strong similarity with "Kessen wa kinyoubi" from Dreams Come True:
Since the early Sonic games are heavy on 70s/80s funk and disco, it is no surprise that several additional songs can be found that are at least reminiscent of the tune from above.
First we have the single "Rescue Me" from "A Taste of Honey" (1980):
Another, less clean example might be the song "Rap-O Clap-O from Joe Bataan in 1979:
The closest that I have come so far is the song "Got to be Real" from Cheryl Lynn (1978):
If you know better examples, I would be happy to hear from them in the comments section!
Now that I have something from a japanese artist, I cannot restrain myself from putting it up:
