Okay, welcome back to our weekly spoiler filled discussion of Doctor Who! If you missed last week's, you can read it here. And here is our weekly disclaimer: Full spoilers are below. Again, the primary purpose of this series of blogs is to creat a space in which we can talk about the episode, with all spoilers in mind. Just remember, there is only one rule to our discussion. Please do not discuss any footage of next week or future episodes as I haven't watched any trailers and don't want future episodes spoiled. Feel free to discuss where you want the show to go, or make predictions. Just leave any actual footage out of it.
Now back to the ick.
My write-up is gonna be light this week. This episode was gross and icky. I'm not gonna rewatch this one..... ever. Probably. Super gross.
Spiders are gross. Giant spiders are bigger gross. It's all just gross. This is worse that Harry Potter 2, honestly. I think the pale flesh of the spiders made them even ickier. Like they were sickly.
I stared at my phone and played games. I listed to the episode and only occasionally glanced upwards. I just couldn't do it.
I was very confused by the ending of the episode. The dick guy shoots the spider. Then... suddenly everyone is aboard the Tardis? I felt like I missed something. Then I pulled up a review from another website and it indicated that there really wasn't a resolution to the tale. What happened? Did they just cut a couple scenes from the end? I don't know.
Let's talk characters. Everyone does a fine job acting, I'd say. But Jodie continued to be a standout. Early in the episode she completely sold herself to my wife and I. "I might be nervous. Or maybe I'm socially awkward. I'm still figuring myself out." That could be my wife's daily slogan. Jodie is just fun and endearing. I love her.
She is rapidly rising through the ranks for me. I just hope that the writing of the show is up to the task of displaying her awesomeness.
Speaking of rising through the ranks. Graham. My dear, sweet Graham. Watching you grieve for your dear wife in her empty house was heart wrenching. I don't have much else to say. But you are too good and too pure for this world. We don't deserve you.
Ryan was fine? Yaz... Okay this frustrated me a bit. This should have been Yaz's time to shine. But she still didn't get enough time in the limelight. At least not to me. We got to know her quite a bit better though, largely thanks to getting to know her family. They're all good. I especially enjoy her mother who is immediately asking if Yaz is romantically involved with anyone and everyone. I just think that they're struggling to give all 3 companions good moments. I'm sure they'll find a good balance. Otherwise, we'll see one or more companions axed from the show, I'm sure. But I have hope that they'll all develop and get their arcs and moments of triumph and failure.
I didn't enjoy this episode. I don't like the spiders. That's a me thing. I'm sure there were plenty of people who enjoyed it. But I couldn't get past the creepy crawlies. I'll struggle to avoid thinking about them as I seek sleep this night.
One more thing, I was very glad to see our friend, the psychic paper, once again.
What did you think of the episode? Did you enjoy it? Did the spiders bother you? What did you like and dislike about it?
