31 Days: Day 24 - Nurse of the Submerged child

   0

It would be remise of me not to include at least one Bloodborne track in this series. I know the chances of seeing a sequel are slim, but I really love Bloodborne and hope to see a sequel someday. For now I’ll highlight one of my favorite bosses from the game

Mergo’s Wet Nurse: Bloodborne

This one was a bit unexpected. The ominous placement of a stroller was certainly a tell, but I didn’t expect Goro’s third cousin to drop in from the sky. Jokes aside this was a very tense battle for me since I went with a close range Holy Blade build and that eats up your stamina fast. In addition some of her moves are multi hit and require some thoughtful dodging to get out of the way. Thankfully I had learned (for the most part) to spend my blood echos before a big fight so that I wouldn’t lose such a sizable amount. As you may have already guessed I died quite a bit. I wouldn’t say Wet Nurse is as hard as Vicar but it still gave me some trouble (mostly due to my own choices in how I built my character at the time).

Design wise I just love the way it looks. For an invisible creature it sure has a lot of detail, or perhaps wears is the right word. Despite being an invisible entity Wet Nurse has a very recognizable and distinct design that I feel is iconic in it's own right.

As for its theme music it too is very distinct. As far as I can recall there is only one other song in the game that sounds like a music box (because it actually is a music box). In fact if you play the music box after killing of Wet Nurse Mergo will laugh before it fades away providing the Nightmare Slain text instead of the usual “Prey Slaughtered”.

There is a lot of things off about the tune. Despite the horror that comes with the nightmare, if Mergo is indeed the nightmare then it’s only a child and wouldn’t know any better. Still we need this dreadful dream to cease and that does mean killing the source, even if it’s in a roundabout way. This makes it one of the sadder moments in Bloodborne (from my perspective), because you need to ultimately kill something for the grand crime of existence when it did nothing intentionally wrong.

That’s just my thoughts on this however. The game is so open and rich in lore that similar events can be understood in a number of different ways. That’s part of the draw of the game that has people still talking about it even after all these years.

A Few things about me
=============================================================

- I'm almost finished with my degree in computer science and I plan on going into independent development and freelancing once I'm done.

- I can be very cynical, but I do try to be positive or curb my negativity. In spite of this I'm actually very jovial in person and I don't get mad often. I would dare say I'm quite happy, even when things seem bleak. I simply don't like industry Bullshit and I'm not one to stand for it, even if it's a game I like.

- I host a series annually called 31 Days where I post 1 horror related or themed video game song a day for the month of october. During this time I also provide keys for games (free of course) to any reader observant enough to find them.

- I've been a member of destructoid since 2010, and a lurker long before then. As such I've seen many people both come and go. Such is the natural order of things.

- I enjoy Art and draw in my spare time

- I also enjoy theatre and films. I especially like Horror movies (both good and bad ones).

- I go camping once or twice a year. I would go out more but my allergies tend to get in the way.

- I don't drink, which may be a surprise to some. I might make a joke or two about it but I stay away from alcohol for my own personal reasons, though you can feel free to drink a pint on my behalf any time you'd like.

This is a commission I had done for me by Inquisitive Ravenclaw. You should check out his site if you like the following piece

I also got a musical piece made for me by the incredible Alphadeus. A little history behind this:

My musical piece came as part of the Songs for Gamers album DLC pack 02. Alphadeus has been making songs for the members of the destructoid community for years already. This past year he opened submissions and I applied. For my meagre efforts I received this lovely piece:

You can find him on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFs2UhJYPVITYWCiqMk-z3w

He also has other venues listed on his profile here, take a look if you are so inclined:

The community is full of people with all kinds of talent and I'm very pleased to be a part of it along with all of you (yes, you too fair reader).
