The Twilight Zone, probably the best TV series I’ve ever seen. It intrigues and fascinates me with many different themes and a variety of episodes. Clearly I’m not alone in this because it has been a staple reference in media even after all these years which does bring me to today’s pick:
Splatoon 2: Shifty Station
I can see parts of where the inspiration comes from. The ever changing nature of the station between splatfests keeps it fresh and the atmosphere lends itself to nebulous space, as if you were stuck in the intro to the Twilight Zone. For all the layouts I’ve played in so far I feel that they do make for a unique and somewhat tense experience, since you have to use the layout to your advantage as best you can while also making sure you don’t kill yourself doing it. The song is also well done and a great fit for the stage. The choices in instrument, the mixed animal noises in the background and the general calm of it make for a song that really captures that space feel but with something more. Perhaps it’s the fact that animal/forest ambience does not belong in a song relating to space. It’s like taking a trip in a rocket to land on a planet that looks and feels like earth, but in truth it isn’t and you know that which makes it scary. While I did have higher hopes for the stage I’m glad it’s a thing and do hope Nintendo takes more chances like this in the future.
