It’s no secret that I love Majoras Mask. You would think that with only 4 dungeons and the same 3 day cycle repeating over and over again that there would be nothing left to talk about. The game is just over 18 years old after all. Even so I always find myself coming back to Termina at least once a year. The more I play the more I want to know about that world and sometimes I even leave with something new. This brings me to today’s selection.
Great Bay Coast – Majoras Mask
When I was a kid playing this game Great Bay Coast was probably the scariest place for me, even more so than the Shadow Temple or the Well from Ocarina of Time. The thing that unsettles me the most is just the constant oppressive music that plays. This led to me spending most of my time in the Zora Domain where the music was peaceful and happy. Something that had never really occurred to me is that the music does change to the theme of Termina Field after you free that regions Giant, problem is that you will eventually need to reset time which resets the music. Truth be told I probably missed it because most of the game will be spent listening to the “Majora” version of that regions music.
I say Majora version because I recently noticed that there is a connection to Majora’s main theme and the theme for the 4 regions of Termina. Southern Swamp, Mountain Village, Great Bay Coast, and Ikana Valley all share the same basic theme, just remixed in a different way to better convey the theme of those areas. These themes only play if the Giant for that area hasn’t been freed during any single run (3 days). Now Here is Majoras regular theme:
At the very least I can say that the beginning portion of each song from the 4 regions is effectively a remix of Majora’s main theme. It makes sense really. The curse brought on by the mask is so powerful, so deeply ingrained that is warps the very essence of Termina. It adds a lot more meaning to a group of songs that I simply thought were oppressive and creepy.
The more I play the more I want to know about Termina. There is still so much about that world that we just don’t know and I really hope that one day we get to go back, especially in a post Breath of the Wild Zelda universe.
