Cblogs of 5/14 & 6/18/2018 + Arkham Bore

I am very near finishing Batman: Arkham Knight when I came into the not-so-sudden realization that I wasn’t much enjoying my time with it. It didn’t take long for that thought to register, because it was burrowing in the back of my mind since the third or so hour with the game.

My problem with the game can entirely be traced to its vapid, empty, repetitive, and boring open-world design. It is obvious that the open world came first, and then the developers filled it with stuff to justify its existence, with each piece of “content” a repetitive task repeated into infinite boredom.

While both Arkham Asylum and Arkham Knight had some elements of open-world design into them, both managed to be more like 3D Metroidvania’s. With depth in content rather than simple excess.

One instance in Arkham Knight encapsulates everything that is wrong with it. In a main story mission, Batman gets information in an important character being hostage, and this mission appears to be very urgent. Yet, you can completely ignore and it and go on hunting stupid Riddler trophies. Not only does it showcase the emptiness of everything you do in the game, where the reason behind every action becomes the simple fact that is more action, but it also shows the serious pacing problems it creates.

Put simply, the story, along with everything, takes a backseat to the open-world. Nothing is urgent (with the exception of one stage in the game), and the majority of what you do is some repetitive shit. Honestly, even with experience points liberally distributed, there is no real sense of progress either.

Now let’s talk about the car. Honestly, at first, I didn’t get all the dislike for the car, or the tank battles. Until I fought a number of tanks that probably is more than France and Germany have. Like the open world, the car came in first, and then a hell lot of activities was shoehorned in to justify it.

In the other hand, the predator mode, which in my opinion was the best part of the last two Arkham games, takes a backseat.

Now let’s go into the sidequests, which are probably the worst offenders. OK, let use accept Riddler’s many stupid riddles, some which requires the car to solve, because apparently Riddler is aware about your latest tech. Why does nearly every other side mission involve a single repetitive task being repeated again and again. Two-Face, that’s three or four bank robberies where you defeat the using predator mode. Penguin, that’s three or four car chases from above and then a brawl. Firefighters, that’s twelve or so brawls. Towers, 18 predator raids. Bombs, 100 tank battles. Fire, 4 car chases. Checkpoints, 20 brawls.

Other than a mission regarding the Man-Bat, and another featuring a serial killer, not a single quest involves any story bits, cutscenes, or any fucking context.

Worst of all, Arkham Knight is a very competent game, with exciting gameplay possibilities. Yet, in its core design, it is an exercise in repetitiveness, with no sense of pacing or progress. Just like the Arkham Knight’s grand plan. It’s much ado about nothing.

*- As someone who is increasingly bored of open-world games, I a worried about getting into Breath of the World. However, once I play it, I somehow think Casus Gaming's thoughts on how maybe avoiding gamey systems such as fast travel and collectethons may be the best way to enjoy it. To truley explore the world as an in-game explorer.

S- This bloke, Lord Spencer, who has been reviewing games for a while, is back with another Sega Saturn review, this time featuring the TRPG Blazing Heroes. Come to think about it, when is the next review?

More like Arkham world

Calling a time trial a riddle, like we are all so bloody stupid (yes I am for chasing after these damn things)

T- One of Microsoft's main e3 reveals was Halo: Infinite. Greenhornet214 shares his thoughts about what this newest entry into the franchise is going to be. My bet is on multiplayer only (JK).

T- Even if you don't like, or maybe even despise golf, then VVerner Herrzwagaz guarntees that you will still enjoy Golf Story, a game that's is as much about golf as it is about stories.

WARNING- As someone who is very much against the lax quality control of Steam, I am apprehensive about the Switch's eShop becoming the same, like this game that Flegma is warning us about; Lost Future Omega.

R- If you are a fan of ascot platformers, and someone who owned Sony consoles, then odds that you have played Ratchet & Clank which Kerrik52 reviews favorebly in this blog.

R- Kerrik52 also favorebly reviews Resident Evil 5, which despite being maligned by some is still a solid action game, minus the boulder punching parts.

F- I don't' understand people who say they aren't anime fans, like any other medium, it has a wide variety of genres and styles. Retrofraction revies an anime that deals with very heavy themes, such as loss a grief. One thing that it has in common with most anime is its nonsensical title, Violet Evergarden.

Or maybe call it Arkham car

Or Arkham DLC, maybe they should have added a new villain, The DLC Man
And all this without mentioning the terrible DLC practices of the game. Maybe the only good thing about it is that it spares me from compulsively needing to play more of the game.
Anyway, here are the games I am currently playing. Those in bold I am going to review when completed:
  • No More Heroes (Wii).
  • Shining  Wisdom (Saturn).
  • Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U).
  • Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4).
  • Affordable Space Adventures (Wii U).
  • Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS).

Also, here are my latest reviews:
