Happy May, everyone! I can't believe the year is a third over already. Crazy, right?
I haven’t played much this year, don't think any new releases, but I've put some time into Sunset Overdrive. The 2014 cult hit still plays great…..almost too great. Definitely something Insomniac needs to revisit at some point. If anyone needs a refresher, it’s a third-person shooter set in a quartineed city after an energy drink turns everyone into bloodthirsty mutants. There's some base-defense, some platformer collecto-a-thon to fill it out. With Insomniac's trademark zaniness.
A lot of open world games have tried to improve travelling around, making it part of the fun, and SO delivers on that. It's part Jet Set Radio, part Infamous….traversing is just so smooth. Bouncing, grinding, air-dashing, wallriding, waterskiing…. actually there's none weird thing. No ability to run. Kind of funny.
There's a lot of love that went into this game. There's not a single boring alley to walk down. You could feel the effort put into it.
Also there are crazy guns. It is an Insomniac game like I mentioned. Guns that shoot vinyl records, guns that shoot wrenches, bowling ball launchers, RC helicopters that hold pistols, bottle rocket guns. It's impressive and beautiful in action. Plus all your guns can get mods for different effects.
It's a surprisingly deep game, with the style system to deal more damage from bigger combos, and how it all ties in with mods. Also playing online got better mods from tougher challenges, but it that needs a larger online community to extend it's life.
Anyone else enjoy Sunset Overdrive? Anyways to the recaps!
* - Those who do not know history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them. And those who do not know 90’s wrasslin’ are doomed to be M A D O N L I N E…. it's all the rage these days, Brother. A LevelHeaded Gamer sees some parallels between the Attitude Era and today's outrage culture.
A - Video games have the power to educate and entertain the masses unlike any medium before. Monkey830 argues that that power has never been put to better use than in Assassin's Creed: Origin, warning society of the pure evilness of the hippopotamus. Steer clear of these magnificent beasts!
Get out of my swamp!
Out of the frying pan and into the fire, am I right? Ha ha ha!
