Cblogs of 2/14/18 + Wishing for More Time

Hello all.  I'm back after my week hiatus.  Thanks to Larx for covering my rear last week as I've been dealing with flu/sinus infection/upper respiratory infection for myself and then my wife.  But things are getting back to normal and I'm back.

I figured I'd talk a bit about just not having time like I used to for video games.  That's become apparent with release of Monster Hunter: World.  It's my first time with a Monster Hunter title and let me just say I absolutely love it!  The fighting, the monsters, the loot, I love everything about it.  When I'm playing it, it's one of my favorite games in recent memory.

I do have one problem with the game, although if I'm being honest, it's more a problem with me than the game itself.  That problem being, I feel for me to get maximum enjoyment from MH, I need a lot of time to play it.  I want to be able to explore every nook and cranny.  I want to be prepared and take my time when I'm fighting a difficult monster.  I want to be able to join people on their hunts, but I just don't have the time.  I've been gaming in 45 minute increments at most recently due to the busy day to day parts of life.  That just isn't enough time to thoroughly enjoy a game such as MH.

As things stand, I'm hopeful life slows down a bit here in the near future and I look forward to being able to dive into MH balls deep.  For the time being, I'm sticking with a return to the Bioshock series.  A lovely series that is perfect for my small gaming times and still holds up really well.  I still love the series and am enjoying myself immensely.  Still, I hope to see you all on the hunt some day!

* - Kyle Yadlosky goes into detail about how he became a man. I personally became a man while listening to NSync and Backstreet Boys playing hide the salami. Kyle on the other hand became a man because of fighting games. Now I'm not 100% sure what's going on here, but I know I love it and it makes me feel funny in my pants

* - We have some funny people here on Destructoid as shown on the Comments of the Week blogs. FakePlasticTree takes a look at last week and highlights the best and funniest moments from the front page and Qtoid. Puns galore!

S - Welcome to the blogging show Roxas1359! For his first blog here Roxas starts with his first in a series about video capture devices. This time through Roxas takes a look at the Dazzle DVC 100

P - Hey Gamemaniac3434 is back but this time with a podcast. GM and LimoMaker give us an introduction and take a look at Limbo, one of my favorite games of all time. On a side note, I'd totally watch these two in a sitcom or a romantic comedy

    Food porn!

N - Oculin loves looking at pieces of games that didn't necessarily make the cut. For this blog, Oculin takes a look at some parts of Final Fantasy XI that didn't make the cut

T - MountainBlade takes a look at the arguments for and against what Joel did during The Last of Us. While not my favorite game ever, I can appreciate the emotional story and the tough choices Joel made. MountainBlade highlights these here and would like to know your opinion

L - Dephoenix reminds us of the next book for the book of the month club here at Dtoid. If you're interested take a look. Looks like a good book as usual for this month

Love Bioshock 2 to this day

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment

Just for Kicks

There are so many aspects of a story that tend to get overlooked, but one of the hugest is the trusty sidekick. These characters are mostly subjected to simply being the butt of a joke or only exist to service the narrative, but they help immerse players in the world, and they’re too often forgotten in favor of the star of the show.

For instance, look at Clank from the Ratchet & Clank series. This adorable robot spends the majority of the game strapped to Ratchet’s back and mainly works to further gameplay, but the experience would not be the same without him. Even if it’s only for a brief moment, he even gets his own playable segments in the newest reboot of the franchise. This little guy means a lot to me, and it’s tough not to love him.

Then, of course, there are annoying fucks like Navi in Ocarina of Time. How many times can you scream, “Hey, listen!” before I start daydreaming about strangling you until you’re but a distant memory? In Navi’s case, I’m going to throw out an arbitrary number and say twenty-three. I get why Navi exists, to help lead players in the right direction and offer vague tips, but holy fuck do I wish someone had the common sense to delete that bastard fairy from existence.

For this month’s Bloggers Wanted, I want to hear about your most memorable sidekicks and companions. It doesn’t matter why you remember them, whether love or hate, but I know there are plenty out there that folks are passionate about. Hell, you could even talk about the cute, furry little creatures that all of the best developers put in their creations, like the floating death machines in Castle Crashers. I don’t care if their story is written into the script or it’s part of your own headcanon that only exists inside your sick, twisted, totally fucked up brain. Lay it on me, y'all.

To participate, head over to the community blogs and format your title as “Just For Kicks: [insert title here].” If it’s good enough, there’s a chance that you might even see your words grace the Front Page of Destructoid!
