Hello everyone and thank you for stopping by to read the 24th installment of 31 Days. Today’s song is:
Pikmin3: Formidable Oak
In many ways formidable Oak is sort of like a sequel to the submerged castle in Pikmin 2. I feel that in terms of creep factor Submerged Castle comes out on top, but having done it last year I’ve decided to take a look at its successor Formidable Oak.
The main gimmick of both of these levels is that there is a wraith that spawns when certain conditions are met, and it cannot be conventionally killed. It is imposing and terrifying, especially because these wraiths put you on a soft timer while they’re invulnerable. Another tense and almost gut wrenching aspect of this is how quickly they can kill off all of your Pikmin if you aren’t careful.
Now what the wraith in Pikmin 3 does is it takes this thing to a whole new level. Not only can’t you hurt it initially, but the wraith has also filled the tree with illusions of enemies (that still hurt just as bad). In addition it has regenerative properties, so when you can hurt it you actually need to destroy the plasma that comes off the wraith lest it regain health. Now you have to do all of this while dodging attacks on the same set of Pikmin you used to get to the arena in the first place. As someone who hates losing Pikmin this fight was a nightmare.
The music doesn't help any either. It sounds both lonely and creepy. This feeling is again enhanced by the fact that nothing besides the wraith is actually real in this area. The wraith is messing with you, activly trying to deter and confuse you. Unlike most other enemies in the game, the scary bit here is that the Wraith smart like that.
