21 Installments down (today included), and only 10 more to go. For the sake of transparency I backed this game on Kickstarter, today’s song is:
Among The Sleep: Forest
Let me start by saying that Among the sleep is one of the games where being helpless and very weak makes sense, since you play as a toddler. I would also like to point out the fact that this kid has better motor skills than most early horror protagonists.
Among the sleep sees you take on the role of a toddler who receives a sentient talking teddy bear (named Teddy) as a gift for his birthday. You wake up that night to find that Teddy has been taken and set out to find him. The task is simple enough and soon you are reunited with him, but all is not well. Teddy tells the player that something isn’t right and that they need to find Mom. So from there on out your adventure into the surreal begins. I would liken it to an episode of the Rugrats, if Rugrats was intended to scare the shit out of kids.
I mean look at this shit, it comes out of a well like Samara from The Ring and stalks you like the bursar stalks students who are .50 cents past due on their tuition payments.
Gameplay wise Among the sleep is mostly puzzle work with a bit of monster evasion. The Horror lies in the games overall atmosphere and pacing. Yes you get scares from time to time with enemies, but the fear is in the uncertainty of it all. You just don’t know when something is going to come along and ruin all your hard made progress. Some songs might lead you to believe something is coming to get you soon, others are just unsettling considering the aesthetic of the stages. All of this works together to create an enjoyable horror experience that keeps you on your toes.
