Hello everyone and welcome to day 16 of 31 days. Today’s song is:
please note that the song used here is the boss theme in the us version
Sonic CD: Boss theme (US) version.
Talk about intimidating this song really is something. I don’t know which I find creepier, the laugh or the music itself. The song plays with a degree of urgency, and it’s really got some power to it. Even though your simply facing off against Robotnik, the same Robotnik you’ve fought 100 times before, this song makes what was once a routine encounter a more menacing one. This is one of the few songs that actually made me feel paranoid after playing it at night. In that sense I suppose they did a good job as that seemed to be the intention of switching up the track for the US version. The JP version is this
The difference is night and day. As for my involvement with sonic CD I didn’t play it until very late in the game, and while some people hold it in very high regard I can’t say I felt the same by the time I got to it.
Now before you decide to impale me on a pike hear me out. I got it in a collections package and was somewhat confused by it when I got my hands on it, since it was rather different from the previous entries. No chaos emerald, the zones felt a bit weird, and the soundtrack while good was still different, at least from what I was used to. The time mechanic while interesting was not all that good in my opinion. You have to gain massive speed to travel through time which I feel is part of the games problem. If you don’t know the level getting the proper jump into the past or future can be a problem as what’s ahead can slow you down, possibly even enough to render your pass through a time post useless. Time travel is alright in and of itself but it lacks the consistency and fluidity of a game like Oracle of Ages. I also feel like these time posts hinder some of the “exploration” and experimentation/consistency of level routs. You could be traveling in a particular route and then hit a post that you don’t want, and then get flung into a version of the level you may not even like. If you want to get rid of it you have to activate it and purposely stop to cancel it which breaks the flow of a sonic game (at least for me).
While it’s not a bad game I can’t say I enjoyed it more than something like sonic 2 or sonic 3 and knuckles. For those of you that enjoyed it Kudos to you, in the end playing games is about playing the things that make you feel happy.
