All Good Things: The End of Diablo 3

   0

Diablo is probably my favorite series of games. I didn't even play the first one, so Diablo 2 was just that good. I was even invested in the lore, when they brought it up in Diablo 3. Unlike, apprently, the users of Metacritic, I did not stop playing after a few minutes because of server issues. I waited a few days and then went to town. I played the game for about a year and a half, until I beat Reaper of Souls, which was excellent. Well, except the ending, because it's bullshit. Diablo 3 already had an ending, and I'm here to talk about it.

It's hard not to have strong feelings about the end of a series you love and Diablo 3 let me experience that. The end of Diablo 3 is basically an ending for the series. SPOILERS You win. END SPOILERS

Not only do you win, but the last boss (guess its name) represents the collected souls of all the baddies. This means that your victory is absolute. Even the angels respect your ass. The realms of both mortals and angels celebrate and you finally fucking win the endless struggle. It's awesome. I couldn't be happier that Diablo could end with a conclusive, no bullshit cliffhangers, ending. A happy ending, where humanity shows up everybody and wins all the chips. And then Reaper of Souls happens and conjures a sequel-hook out of thin fucking air. But that didn't happen. It didn't. LA LA LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU

I didn't think I wanted Diablo to end until it did and got a pretty great ending. They respected what came before, by filling-in the backstory of the first Diablo, and then crafted a final battle for all the marbles.  I loved it.

I don't have a problem with a series ending. Especially if it can establish a good story and end it properly. The media industries are creating so much new content and new IP right now, that we're in the middle of a glut of art. We don't need it all. Why should a series last 30 years with no coherent plan in sight? At least Dark Tower was a planned series with an end in mind. But Mega Man? Those games had stories, sure. But the biggest problem with Mega Man's de-facto death is the lack of any resolution or planning for the end of the series. It was just dropped. As if Mega Man can't sell units or doesn't have fans. Mega Man fans (especially Legends fans) got a tough pill to swallow. I feel for them.

Meanwhile, I got a red carpet and a blowjob in comparison.  That really helps with the adjustment.
