I know why I don't drive a convertible - Dev Diary Day 2

   0
As promised, I'm gonna do this Dev Diary alongside my first attempt of realising a video game.
Why I'm not completely ignorant to the way development works and have taken part in several smaller productions myself, the process of doing a whole game completely by myself is an experience that has eluded me to this point.

So what happened on Day 2? A lot actually, only nothing of what I had really hoped to achieve. I said yesterday I wanted to start creating maps today yet it was not meant to be.
While in part because of some bureaucracy stuff I had to take care of I wasn't aware of one of my worst enemies: differing formats in EVERYTHING. So yeah, today was mostly spent converting stuff into other stuff, merging stuff with other stuff and realizing that I basically had to redo my characters because it wasn't fitting in size. *sigh*

Well, I said it before: I like it, but I'm not a professional. Is it a setback? Of course. Is it a major setback? Not really. I planned up to two weeks for mapping alone.
I tend to have several good ideas, but actually visualizing them is sometimes harder than it seems, so I planned in some extra time for everything that's part of the visual process.
Audio won't be the biggest problem I guess, as won't the story. The first I have experience in (did SFX for video games and played in band once and recorded our albums so that's nothing new). The latter is mainly decided and writing on crunchtime is nothing I couldn't do. Everyone who once attended a university and had to hand in a 35-page minimum paper and was on page 5 two days before you had to hand it in can attest to that.

So what did I learn today?

- It's not the abysses of production, that I fear...it's the potholes.

- Reducing distractions GREATLY helps the workflow. (Duh!)

- Extra time for the visual process? Good idea.

Playlist for today?

Nothing really mixed, I got hooked on Queens of the Stone Age's great great "Songs for the Deaf" album.

Anything else?

Holy fuckin' shit was that hard to stomach. I mean...I played Manhunt 2, I watched the TV show where someone (who's killing people by equipping a hydraulic cave-bear-suit and mauling them) gets dismembered and has his body parts refurbished as a sabretooth, but THIS....NOTHING could have prepared me for this. Maybe the scene alone doesn't have the impact but damn, that was the single most brutal moment I witnessed in ever.

See you tomorrow
