What I want in 2012: A united front

   0

Edit: I know I'm posting this way late, but this topic really motivated me. Now that SOPA and PIPA have been shelved for the time being we have won the battle but the war isn't over.

As with any new year, or any time at all really, there are several games that I would love to see announced or be playing, but thats not what I want most this year. This year I would much prefer the more human aspect of the videogame industry we all love to get its act together.

Nothing else demonstrated how divided we are amongst ourselves than what happened over December. The Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act drew a clear line in the sand between those who simply love games and those who see it as nothing but a number that must tick upwards.

We flocked together to fight this proposed Orwellian control that copyright holders insist they need. Our supposed voice was revealed to be nothing but a facade created by the very people who throw their support in with this terrible legislation. The companies who rely on us for their very existence shied away and refused to understand what this would actually mean for our industry.

As the major publishers such as EA, Nintendo, and more either refused to take a stance or just reduced their support, their support of the ESA, who is staunchly supporting the bill, has not been reduced at all. Epic may have stated that they do not support the current version of SOPA, but where are the steps taken such as Red 5 has in creating the League for Gamers. Now supporting something is not the same as being against it. There is no room for neutrality here.

Of course there will be sides to this fight, but the videogame industry should be a side. We shouldnt be divided into camps. This is our industry. We, the gamers and developers, love the products and they, the publishers, profit off our love. We cant function without one another so if something comes up that will cause irreparable damage to the other we should rally together to stop it.

I want to be able to stand strong with the industry I love as a whole. Unfortunately we have our side and they have theirs. Please, magical videogame gods, find a way to repair this growing rift this year. This is a war against our way of life and as Benjamin Franklin said: we must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.

About Zanthisone of us since 12:35 PM on 06.25.2011

Growing up in the middle of redneck nowhere, conveniently located 30 minutes from Disney World, I had no choice but to escape into a world of wonder known as video games. And Disney, I really like Disney too. Now in the midst of cultures who have absolutely no understanding or use of me, I frolicked off to University where I study Accounting and Journalism.
