Hi! How have you OH MY GOD!!!! The Blogs are in danger!!!!
Time to bring a little class to this battlefield.
We all know him, we all love him, a few of us work for him. It's Capt. Bus!!!! Yaaaaaaaaay
What made you start blogging and why Destructoid?
Around mid-2009 (I really don't know exactly when) I read about Destructoid in a little Extra Credit piece in GamesTM, a UK multiformat games magazine of high esteem. I checked in on it and was refreshed by the craziness going on. I threw an account together and the first weeks at Destructoid I spent simply throwing comments out there. A lot of comments. I basically spent most of the time as a foil for any trolling or just dishing out my nutty quips. One particular comment section in a fairly innocuous PS3 firmware news article actually prompted me to blog about it.
Before that though, I did a news blog about Spielberg wanting to produce the Halo movie, so that gives you some indication about how long ago it was!
You want to know something hilarious? Looking back on my old blogs I did a monthly musing about unlockables in video games, and Occams posted a comment to which I made a particularly sharp retort! This was way before I knew him as the sagely gatekeeper of the cblogs, and may have been before he was the sagely gatekeeper of the cblogs, but I found it so amusing I felt compelled to share it!
Here (Dont mind me, just putting things in links and stuff Law)
Over the course of a few months I wrote around a dozen blogs, a few monthly musings, some news stories, some personal stuff and some irreverent crap. Some of the stuff I got amazing feedback from, but mostly nothing to write home about. More than 30 comments or 20 faps? Those times did not come to me in those opening months, my friend. I was a bit daunted by the tepid initial response, but I persevered. I want this to speak to people who contribute on here feeling the same pinch. In my first nine months at Destructoid, my name would not have raised even a glimmer of recognition amongst the community. I can strongly assure you of that. Now, I am being interviewed!
Where did you get your username and avatar?
Username? I need to give a little backstory. Back in the mists of timehere was a cable channel in the UK called the Paramount Comedy Channel, (now known as Comedy Central UK). I used to send emails to their teletext forum and I would use the pseudonym Captain Bus. It sounded like a punchy, humorous name and I took to it like a duck to hot butter.
When I went to university, I signed up to their online forums and I used the same handle. My avatar was originally just a bus but that never really took. One time when doing a GIS for "Captain Bus" I found a picture of a cheerful mascot for the Kowloon Motor Bus Company. I cannot for the life of me find this mascot anywhere now except for in a bizarre flash game called KMB Survivor. Here is a screenshot. Picture Link
Now, basically, the dude looks just like Bomberman. So, I thought, if they did that, I will do some rejigging, make a superhero with a hybrid of their design and that of Bomberman and bish bash bosh there's a new avatar!
I took this image of Bomberman enjoying a watermelon as my template:
My forum logo shows the whole sordid transformation, the antenna goes, he gets a tinted visor, a mouth, a CB insignia and full red coloring to finish the act, an instead of a watermelon he's showing up a plush toy remake. My blog avatar is a close up on black background for classiness.
Your favorite game. Too simple? Your favorite scene from your favorite game.
My favorite game! Wow, that's like asking who your favorite child is! Except harder as I only have one child!
You know what? An interview is a time to go in with both feet and I am going to do that with this interview. I am awarding Tetris as my favorite game, as it is the game that got me gaming. When I was a child we went to a Debenhams (UK department store) and in that Debenhams there was a toy department with a demo unit of a Game Boy and a copy of Tetris. That game was all it took to agitate the fever within me to play video games. What a beautiful and utterly timeless premise. Anyone looking to make a game should play that game and say to themselves "does my game reward my players as they improve in their perception of the game the way this game does?" and if they cannot honestly say yes, revert to the drawing board.
Favorite scene from Tetris? That's a lot harder because Tetris isn't exactly overwhelmed with scenes. I head if you're amazing at the game and can get to level 9 in the B game then you are treated to a crazy dancing troupe and a space shuttle launch. I guess that qualifies, though I never got there myself.
What inspired you to start Commentoid?
Well, to be honest,it wasn't me who was inspired to start Commentoid. I need to give a little back-story so you need to bear with me again!
The Destructoid staff started their Comments of the Week blog back in July 2009. It was a fantastic idea, but bloody difficult to keep up so the feature eventually had to be scrapped.
I thought "I love rating comments, so I'll try doing that." So I did. It was a mental idea, but "Captain Bus' Comments of the Week" started on 28th Feb 2010.
It was Zxyliac who suggested the categories of TRUTH, LOL and WUT? that you know and love today.
I did it for 10 weeks and then had to give up Destructoid altogether thanks to work and personal commitments. Then, one day in July last year, mrandydixon tracked me down and pointed me to Occams Thoughts on a Wednesday:
So, in shot, the inspiration for Commentoid came first from the Destructoid staff, who inspired me to start a 10 week run of Comments of the Week, with the format inspired by Zxyliac. This inspired Occams electric toothbrush to write a blog about that run, that inspired mrandydixon to message me, and inspired GoldenGamerXero to set up a new account and super team!
I have a lot of people to thank for this, and feel a little embarrassed to be considered the sole progenitor.
What inspired you to start Debatoid?
Ah! The Debatoid origin story is a lot less convoluted than the Commentoid origin story!
I had this idea for a community inspired debate blog rolling around in my head for some time. I knew there had to be some grunt work to get it off the ground, and for the first one I knew I'd need to get at least one other guy on board so that we could actually have a debate! Well, I thought, who better than the guy who tracked me down and got me back into Destructoid? mrandydixon!
It was great putting it together but I was absolutely amazed by how popular it got, and even more surprised when Andrew Kauz got in touch and asked if he could put it on the front page, and if he could be in a future edition of the series!!
(A clean link is much nicer to look at then a long URL- Law)
Despite the success of Debatoid, one thing I wanted to make clear to my brothers in Commentoid though, is that I am still commited to the Commentoid cause.
What inspired you to be inspired to make Commentoid and Debatoid?
Ha! Well, it's been all about the people here. The reactions you get and the work that everyone puts in to make the place so goddamn awesome just kind of compels you to want to do stuff in return that brings the community joy. I love how one day I can have a deep intellectual discussion about the future of physical media, and the next day I can suggest that the guy's finger in a Skyrim screenshot looks like a crooked dick. There's not many communities in which both are given a warm welcome.
(Not a link! Just kidding, its a link-Law)
If you could hug anyone on Dtoid who would it be?
There are so many I love in the community, including yourself, but if I were to only have one hug to hand out it would be mrandydixon. He's the guy who roused me from my hiatus and brought me back to Destructoid. However, as I hugged Andy I'd be clasping the hand of Occams electric toothbrush, the man who gave mrandydixon the impetus to contact me and bring me back.
If I was allowed more hugs, I'd at least hug Elsa too. She has always been unwaveringly supportive of my blogs and her kindness and generosity of spirit are so amazing.
I would also give manly fistbumps to all the Commentoid crew. Lord knows we signed up for a tough job.
If you could punch anyone on Dtoid who would it be?
It used to be SexualChocolate. I couldn't stand his trolling back in my heavy commenting days, but i turns out he is a lovely man. I now follow him on Twitter as well! So crazy how things change like that.
I'm afraid there are no others. It takes some doing to raise my temper nowadays.
When I grow up I want to be
Still in control of my fundamental faculties, I hope! I think the one thing they keep quiet about adulthood when you are younger is that you are not granted any special abilities that make you more capable of handling more mature situations. You simply have your past to look back on and go "did I make the right choices"? there's no level up screen and a new set of attributes suddenly open to you. If only life were more like video games!
Now that Ive grown I can
Now drink beer and enjoy the taste. Seriously, when I was a kid, beer tasted like the devils own piss and I vowed never to subject my tongue to such horrors again. Nowadays? I love the stuff.
Since youve started so many things, there must be some ideas you planned but canned. Some of them would be?
Ah, so you'd like to know my secrets, would ye?
It's funny you should mention this, because I have had a particular idea that might or might not have legs, and you've given me the perfect opportunity to pitch it!
I think we all know now that Destructoid has community blogs and forums, and the two are very much distinct. There are some people who use both, but more often than not someone or something would be well known in one part, and in the other it would be completely unknown.
For instance, I've been in the forum only a few times. I've clocked up around 20 posts (i.e. total noob). However, there's all sorts of crazy stuff going in there, some of which I am ashamed to admit I wouldn't have the first clue where to start on. There are people I recognise, and people who I know absolutely nothing about. Similarly, I noticed a forum thread about an achievement badge, and someone suggested including getting a Comment of the Week as part of getting that badge. Gobun then said "WTF is Comment of the Week?". My first thought on seeing this and thinking about my experience of the cblogs and forums, was, "what if I'm missing something I might like, and what if a forum-goer was missing something they might like, and it was just down to where they lurked?"
My idea was, to create something in a crossover style: Take a well-known cblogger, and a well-known forumer, give the cblogger a forum thread (or thread series) to read to interpret into a cblog, and the forumer a cblog (or cblog series) to read to interpret into a forum thread. Kind of like Tekken X Street Fighter and Street Fighter X Tekken, so it could be called CBlogs X Forums and Forums X CBlogs.
Then I thought it might be a silly idea, so I left it at that.
How did you get your bus related super powers?
Well, that is a bus-tacular question, Mr Law. My powers were thanks to me being bitten by radioactively mutated Bus that killed my parents outside one evening while waiting at a Bus Stop after we watched the movie "Speed". The Bus was originally chartered on a planet in a system with a red sun, hence its incredible reaction to the radiation it received after a freak accident in a lab on an experimental flight in its home galaxy. It was there that magical green alloys got affixed to its wheels from an intergalactic peacekeeping force that allowed it to travel freely through the universe on a glowing gold snowboard.
It was there that I avowed to avenge the death of my parents at the hands of the intergalactic gold surfboarding radioactively mutated green alloyed Bus. My first foray into crimefighting was by trying to built an amazing robotic suit, but I ran out of Lego so I bought some cheap scuba gear, a motorcycle helmet, and 50ml of correction ink. The rest is history.
There is a woman who seems to be looking in your general direction with a peculiar look on her face. As she comes up to you, you quickly say.
I say nothing, but carefully (and very subtley) check that my fly is zipped.
If I were to tell you that you had one day left to live, you would?
Get a second opinion then, if that one was no better, go and buy life insurance.
What is your most prized possession? (Family and Loved ones dont count)
Well shit, if they don't count I'm out of luck as there are not many possessions I prize more... I'm going to say my car. It's a crappy old Rover 45 with a big scratch up the side where I hit a pillar in a multi-storey car park, but it means I can get to work and can take my family out, and all the inevitable crap that comes with it when you have to take a toddler with you. Without it, well I'd probably have to go get another car!
If you could ask the community a question it would be? Well given the chance to ask the community a question, I would personally ask if they want to be involved in Commentoid or Debatoid, and would ask them to drop me a PM or email me at captainbus AT gmail DOT com if they want to be.
So far I have been fortunate that I have had a lot of volunteers in Debatoid. Do not feel like you can't do it or you aren't good enough. If you have the time to write 500 words and you have strong views on video games, you have the time and ability to enter Debatoid.
Commentoid is a somewhat different kind of commitment, it takes a good amount of time to go through a week's worth of comments and compile the results, but even if you feel like doing a guest entry one week, drop me a line and let me know.
