Just wanted to share a thought today. No big thesis here.
No matter how jaded you may be, at the end of the day you just want to enjoy a good game. When you come home from a long day at work, it's nice to just lose yourself for an hour or two in an awesome gaming experience. So when you've beaten one game and it's time to move on to the next one, you hope you made a good choice and sit down, bracing yourself to be totally immersed in a digital world of epic fun.
...and you wait. And you wait. But it just doesn't happen. Even though this game got ridiculously positive reviews, it received multiple game of the year awards, and people are raving about it, you just can't seem to see what the fuss is all about. You've already put in many hours into it, just waiting for it to "get good," cuz sometimes a game takes time to ramp up the fun. But you're still bored out of your wits and people haven't been saying, "it takes some time to get good". What's going on here? Why can't you seem to love this awesome, awesome game? Have you lost your soul? Are you depressed? ENJOY THIS GAME, GODAMNIT. C'MON NOW.
Most recently this happened to me with Mass Effect 2. I find the game utterly mindless and boring. This also happened with BioShock. For a lot of other people, Demon's Souls seems to be one game that many people just don't "get" while others rave about it. I'm in the latter category, but I can understand the former.
I suppose what it comes down to is just taste. I guess I just don't like games that are heavy on story with mediocre game play in between. So next time a game is hailed as "BEST GAME EVAR" I'll be on the look out for those characteristics. Are people talking more about the story and "the universe they've created," or are they talking about how great the mechanics are? I'm a mechanics guy. Having both is great too (Half-Life 2, Portal, Batman:AA, Uncharted 3, Deus Ex, etc. etc.), but if the game play is gonna be "meh" I'd rather you just minimize it (adventure games come to mind - although when was the last time I had the patience to play through one of those?).
So next time I find myself not really enjoying a game after a few hours, I'll just throw in the towel and move on. Mass Effect 2, I'm sorry, but it's just not working out for me.
