C-Blog Interviews: Jesse Cortez/Tactix

-How did you get into blogging, and why here?

I first started blogging back in college. My friends and I frequented Destructoid before c-blogs and decided to try our hand at it blogging. So we started one called Gamers Anonymous on blogspot, and tried to post up news, game reviews, and stories about our gaming adventures whenever we could. As most projects that start in college, it didn't last too long after we graduated, but its cool to go back and check out where I started every so often.

Once Destructoid got C-blogs, I didnt contribute much to them at first...I mostly lurked and checked the forums. It wasn't until my first PAX adventure with the Dtoid community (which seriously changed my life), that I decided to try and post more. I just really felt that I had finally found a community that was more like a family than friends, and I wanted to do all I could to give back....and thats how I still feel to this day. I started a weekly personal blog which didnt last too long, but then switched over to the Dtoid Community Discusses blog series, which most people seemed to like and went for about 26 or so editions. That series is actually on my "to-do" list of things to bring back later this year, when (if) I get more free time <3.

-How did you get your name and avatar? (Tactix, not Jesse Cortez.)

My name goes all the back to high school. Back then; I was obsessed with Tic Tacs. I used to carry them in my carpenter jean pocket every day and they would make a sound when I walked everywhere...it was kinda my thing (like the fedora is now :P). Well, my best friends and I were thinking about starting a band, for funzies. Not like we would actually practice or perform, but bands were cool and chicks loved guys in bands.

So we were tossing around names, and I took out my Tic Tacs. "We should do something with this!" So we came up with switching the words and adding an X at the end to make it more extreme. Tactix. My friends dismissed that idea for a band name, but that name always just stuck with me after that, and I've gone by that, or a derivative of it ever since.

If you could call a country your home, what country would it be?

USA! USA! Though, in South Texas where I'm from, it definitely feels more like Mexico...

Favorite game?

I have an answer for this! After much deliberation I've decided that Secret of Mana for the SNES is my favorite game of all time. No other game just brings me that joy that I get when I play it, and most of it it definitely nostalgia driven. That was the game that my little brother and I put countless hours into playing...leveling up with the wolves in the snow level, and flying Flammie around. And not to mention the music is phenomenal!

-Favorite Movie Line

Oh man. This is constantly evolving depending on which bad movie I'm obsessed with. I'm going to cheat and give you three of my past ones:

"What are you talking about? I just saw you!"The Room

"They're zombies! No...they're strippers! No! They're ZOMBIE STRIPPERS!! *cocks gun*"
Zombie Strippers

"HA! I threw that before I came into the room!"Black Dynamite

-I'm scrolling down your blog and there is nothing here that isn't community related. What do you love most about the Dtoid community?

I think what I love most about the community here on Dtoid is just the welcoming nature and the giving back attitude that people have for each other. You meet these people at NARPs or events like PAX, and they are instantly family. I felt closer to the people I met at my first PAX than I felt to any of my current friends after only one weekend...and I think thats just cause everyone I met not only shared the same interested and common experiences, but also just accepted me and others for who they are.

On the same note, most of the community then decides to give back to Destructoid at large. From organizing NARPs, to recording podcasts; from running the game trades thread in the forums, to doing Dtoid community interviews (<3), these things all exist not because Niero and Hamza told us to do them...but because our community is one that feels a part of a group and wants to do whatever we can to entertain and strength the group. Thats something thats hard to find elsewhere on the internets.

-If you could punch anyone here on Dtoid who would it be and why?

I would definitely punch Suff0cat. Cause he makes fun of me on IRC and everywhere, and I think I'm going to jump out of a moving vehicle and THWOMP on my face cause of him. (ALLIANCE! :P)
For serious though, Suff shows his love through punching. So I'd punch him back to show my love. He is one of my best friends on this site from the moment we met at PAX, even though he probably hates hearing it. The asshole.

If you could hug anyone on Dtoid who would it be and why?

Everyone. I would take everyone on Dtoid, alphabetically from Aerox to Zen Albatross, roll them into a katamari ball of Amazing, and then just put my massively ripped arms around it and give it a huge hug. And when I'm done hugging it, I will send it up to space to become a bright shining star! *

It works, bitches. (Only, most of the time it doesn't and you have to stay at lab super late to figure out your compound....stupid research!)

Fedoras huh? *sigh* please explain.

The whole thing with me and fedoras goes back to packing for my first PAX. Power glove had coordinated a "meet and greet over stickam" deal where people could see what they looked like before the trip. This is before I had really interacted at large with anyone on Dtoid. As I'm packing I come across this fedora I had bought at a store a few weeks prior. I asked the stickam chat if I should take the fedora and Knives was like YES!. So I did, and everyone there commented on how awesome it looked. The fedora became my "thing", just like the tictacs were in high school. And its a great way to be remembered at events :P

When I grow up, I want to be....

*singing* "a star, I want to be famous, I want to be in movies!"

But for real, I'm about to graduate with my PhD in organic chemistry and am working toward possibly becoming a professor one day. I basically just want to make my own syllabus that lists my gamertag under my office hours :P.

I used to want to be a games journalist and/or involved in the games industry..and thanks to Destructoid, I've been able to live out a part of that dream as well. It still makes me grateful that the same website I lurked in college would allow me to be doing work for them and let me live out a part of my dream, all while pursuing my professorial dream. Thanks guys!

Now that I'm old I can finally...

spoil my dinner with ice cream. One of the marks of adulthood, to me, is always having my freezer stocked with ice cream, and eating out of the carton with a spoon WHENEVER I DAMN WELL PLEASE!
That and always having a bottle of wine for those special and/or lonely nights ;P

Never too early to start thinking about Christmas, want anything?
(Note: This question snuck in there when I was sending people questions. It is out of place and not intentional.) (Note 2: Im really professional)

Now that I'm older I actually hardly ask for games and the like...whichever ones I want I usually end up buying myself, or finding a way to acquire it. If anything, I want money to make a trip to Europe. I dont nearly see the Dtoid UK/Europe guys as much as I want, and I need to meet Corican. Like, bad.

Who's your favorite Warner Sibling?

Yakko. I still love his wit and humor to this day and he is just so badass. I sort of see my personality a bit in him now, and I think its cause I idolized him so much as a kid. That and he can sing the Nations of the World. (Which I have memorized!!!)

What's your favorite show from Animaniacs? Mine's Pinky and the Brain.

I honestly just loved anything the Warners were in, but I'd have to give a huge props to Slappy the Squirrel cartoons. The breaking the 4th wall stuff that she did was great. Also...Bumbi's mom??? She's.....WAAAAAAAHHH!!!!

Charity is a good thing. Any events coming up? (Charity or otherwise)

Oh, I love this part...

[Begin shameless plug]

As of now there are no charity events planned, but there are TONS of events coming up! This weekend on Saturday (or Sunday...watch the front page for exact date), we will be hosting some members from iPlayWinner on the Justin.tv stream (http://www.justin.tv/destructoid) to play SSF4 and give away some Capcom prizes for people who win online tournaments or other things. And I've recently started a Late Night Community show on the stream on Mon and Wed starting at 11PST (I know! its late...darn getting out of work so late) where I play games with the community and have a couple of Dtoid member guests over skype.

Besides my own personal things to promote, I just want to draw everyone's attention to the regional groups (http://www.destructoid.com/join-a-destructoid-regional-group-near-you--190327.phtml)! I'm actually in charge of the goings on with the regional groups, making sure that the ones that exist try to stay active, and that we start new ones where needed....for instance this month, Dtoid Florida and Dtoid Toronto are trying to get organized again, whereas next month, we should see the re-emergence of Dtoid Denver and North Carolina. So pay attention to the monthly NARP posts that go out that list events in your area, and join the emailers to find out more! And if there isnt a community group near where you live and you think there is enough interest to start one, let me know at [email protected]!

[end shameless plug]

If maybe I told you that you might just have one day left to live what would you do?

I want to give a funny answer, but I would probably just invite all my family and friends together to have a Tactix-con. We could spend the beginning of the day just chilling watching bad movies and playing games, and then start a dance party at night. I'm not super thrill seeking, so I'd probably just want my last day to be a good chill one.

Do you have a Prized Possession? (Note: Family and Loved Ones Do Not Count)

My prized possession would have to be my Yakko stuffed animal. I love that guy. That and my Secret Santa poster that Corican, Gandy, and n0brien sent me (Halfie took the picture). It is seriously the most thoughtful gift I've received...http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/Jesse+Cortez/i-win-dtoid-secret-santa-the-end--161398.phtml
"What would Tactix want? Oh, how about a pic of his two hottest Dtoid UKers with their shirts off? Perfect!"

So, you're on a sinking boat and there is one life boat left. There is a young woman, a child (gender neutral), and an Old Man...What do you do? (Note: Not who do you save...you could, just you know....what do you do?)

Man, if I were in that situation, I would probably start trying to make a raft of some sort out of what we had on the boat while doing my best to find a way to contact the coast guard. All while singing "My Heart will Go On" for the lulz.

I don't want to ask another question, you ask one...also answer it.

My last question is: "How long will you be involved in the Dtoid community"?

and my answer is " As long as you guys will have me around, and my life can handle it. While I can see myself passing on the reins of DtoidSF and Community manager to the younger folks eventually, I'll still do what I can to make this the best community out there.

*Also, related to the hugging questions, I especially want to give YOU a big hug buddy! I've been a fan of this blog series since you started it and love you. Keep up doing what you are doing! It's AMAZING!
