Gran Turismo 5, boondoggle in the making?

   0

As someone who enjoys racing games, I want Gran Turismo 5 to be a success. I want it to be an awesome game that's been worth the 4 years since it was announced at E3 2006. But the more I read about it, the less inclined I am to believe it will be anything but a letdown.

Part of that is because Microsoft's now offering strong competition in the Forza Motorsport series and has cranked out three of those in the time it's taken Polyphony Studios to make one. Each Forza game has not only progressively been better, Forza 3 is the best racing game out on the market right now, and to top that is going to be nearly impossible to do unless Polyphony has a few aces still up their sleeve. That may be the case.

But the majority of that comes from the constant delays, the wishy-washy quotes from Sony about the game, and now, this from Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi: according to CVG, he has claimed that he will be left "angry" when work on Gran Turismo 5 is finally complete - and predicted he won't be satisfied with the final product.

It's one thing to not be satisfied, and truthfully, most producers and game bosses shouldn't be 100 percent satisfied because there's always new things to add in or small changes to be made to perfect something even more. But to hear that he'll be angry when the game is complete, as well as perhaps satisfied, hints that GT5 may have not gone as well as the boys at Polyphony have planned. Add in the changes and expectations placed on the game from its storied past in the previous Gran Turismo games and from its market rivals, and anything that falls short of Forza 3's standards is going to be seen as a "failure." Both by the fans and by Sony, of course.

When the PS3 came to light and GT5 was announced in 2006, I was excited. Four years later, I find it hard to find any interest in the game other than for some of the cars. And heck, some of those "exclusives" that were supposed to debut in Gran Turismo 5 are no longer exclusive: the Nissan GT-R was originally announced as such, but by now, it's in Forza 3, the Need for Speed series and just about everywhere else.

In the end, I'm not sure Gran Turismo 5 is going to live up to its expectations and will let a lot of people down. Oh, it'll still be a good game, but not every game gets to go through development hell and come out all nice and shiny. After all, for every Team Fortress 2 out there, there's a Duke Nukem Forever or twenty waiting to prove that development hell still kills games.
