Grim Fandango is an adventure game, it is often mistakenly labeled as a point and click. Anyway, this game should be in everyone's top 10 lists, this game is amazing, this game is a Legend. This is my story
My first memories of this epic, was on a PC demo disc many, many years ago. I was young so it didn't really click. Fast forward about 8 years and I had just completed The Longest Journey, I had a sudden urge to try and get into adventure games once more. One game was praised, but I unfortunately hardly noticed.
Behold, my subconscious secretly absorbing all info Grim Fandango. There was a familiarity to the preview screenshots, every picture installed a certain sense of deja vu. The reviews made it stand out like a lighthouse in the dead of night. Every other picture somehow related itself to Grim Fandango; what was this game screaming out to me? Grim Fandango
. So I finally took the plunge and got myself a copy. Luckily, I had no troubles getting it to work.
I instantly fell in love with the setting, characters and story. How had I gone this long as a gamer without playing this through? I got up hours earlier than I should have and played as much as I could before college. This happened for weeks. I couldn't really complain about being tired, but it was worth it.
My routine was solid. Then comes the evening when I finally completed it. I was almost in tears, I felt like the game had changed me for the better.
Grim Fandango has left a legacy, it made me buy Psychonauts just because it said "From the creator of Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango". It is one game which has gathered a huge fanbase and made me a willing fan of it forever.
It made me Cosplay as Manny Calavera earlier this year. I really connected myself with the character; Manny helped me understand the finer points of Life (Er...Death).
Grim Fandango (Roughly translated as Dance of the Dead) has left an impact of my life, I'd be a different Gamer if I had not played it. And that goes to anyone, chances are, that if you're reading this, than you have already played it, but if you haven't, Play. It. Now.
I was genuinely surprised to find out just how many people had played it, yet its sales were extremely disappointing, the game was way ahead of its time, and it would take years before it would be recognized for the greatness that it is. Yet the majority of people will recognize that Stylized dead face.
My heart will always be in Rubacava, finding out dirty deeds in the land of the dead, trying to talk sense into a drunk Glottis.
To Quote Manny Calavera: No one knows what is going to happen at the end of the line, So you might as well enjoy the trip.
I will Manny... I will.
