Fanboy Weekly: From shovelware to wiimoting nightmares

   0
Welcome to Fanboy Weekly: Once More With Feeling Edition. For those that haven't checked it out yet I have been writing a new weekly feature for Game Observer. I thought I would repost the older issues so that those that haven't scoped it out yet can enjoy them and that hopefully you will all like it enough to head over to Game Observer to check the newer and current issues of Fanboy Weekly.

Welcome back to Fanboy Weekly. This week I want to call into question the general lack of inspiration in control schemes for the Wii. I know it takes a while to really get a grasp on something as unique as the Wiimote and nunchuck but itís been a couple of years. Case in point, I was willing to put up with a lot of garbage on the DS when it came out but after about a year I was finally seeing things that told me that the developers were paying attention, taking notes, and actively making adjustments to make things better and low and behold we now have a huge pile of great stuff on the DS that just couldnít be done on any other platform.

Instead of this being the case on the Wii, the gems-to-crap ratio is way out of whack. The Wii keeps constantly getting slammed with grade-A shovelware to the point where even when there is a gem on the horizon so many people just stop paying attention to everything coming out on the Wii and a lot of good stuff gets passed up. This isnít helped one bit by the fact that Nintendo doesnít like to do a damn thing to pump their triple-A titles. Sadly the Wii games that donít require any encouragement to keep selling through the roof are titles like Wii Fit and Wii Play and these are the titles that Nintendo opts to keep pouring more into the advertising campaigns and lets other games like Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Super Paper Mario, and the New Play Control games get little to no promotion, never mind the fact that selling games like these will further encourage the production of the types of ingenious games that the Wii deserves and that we deserve.

I was absolutely floored to see Capcom seemingly jump straight into the deep end with a game like Zack and Wiki. Itís ballsyness like this that leads to some truly clever game mechanics that you can design a genuinely engrossing experience around. Instead developers keep simply replacing a button press with waggle *grumble grumble* -- Twilight Princess *grumble*, Okami *grumble*. I would like to say whoever thought that waggle to attack was a good idea, needs to be taken out back, shot in the knee caps, and left to think about what theyíve done. In Okamiís defense, however, the attacking actually required some timing and did work if you kept swinging the Wiimote as fast as humanly possible. Iím not saying that it justifies what Capcom did with the combat controls, just that itís better then Zelda.

Speaking of Zelda, I would like to take a moment to throw out a suggestion as to how to fix the combat in Twilight Princess. Instead of just swinging to attack, put the attack back as a simple button press, and make the Wiimote swing the final stroke of a string of sword slashes. There, I took thirty seconds to fix the game that Nintendo spent multiple years mucking up.

Back to my main point though, we are several years into the life cycle of the Wii and the most tragic thing about what Iíve seen is that the few really good control schemes go unrepeated, yet we keep getting game after game that waggle to everything. SSX Blur is a prime example of a brilliant control scheme that I guarantee will go unrepeated or wonít ever be built upon because nobody bought what I consider to be one of the most enjoyable games one the Wii.

That brings us right back to the heart of the problem. The constant barrage of crap on the Wii has lead to everything that isnít promoted out the wazoo by Nintendo getting ignored and lumped with the incessant amounts of trash that come spewing forth from every publisher that nobodyís heard of until the Wii came along. So please, for the love of good games, please support games like SSX Blur, Zack and Wiki, and Metroid Prime 3. On a side note two out of three of those games are dirt cheap and you would do well to get your mitts on them.

The Fanboy has spoken.
