For a nice round up of what Newell from Valve said you should head over to this blog. Now quoting from Ali D´s Blog: Gabe believes piracy is caused because Pirates offer a better service; fast, free and DRM-free.
I live in south america and the only way for me to get an original copy at an US price is on STEAM. I mean, he is right about piracy, but a lot of it is because in some parts of the world we dont even have game stores. Sometimes I wonder who are more stupid, the pirates or the developers and the industry.
Now: the developers and industry overall can keep their heads up their ass about this issue, or they can start to understand that if you dont aknowledge a market as a market, if you dont invest something in it, you are not entitled to expect returns. And you definitely are not entitled to say that they are stealing products in a place they dont even consider a market to begin with.
You can disagree with me on the last point, but you would have to agree that they dont care about this side of the planet. Actually STEAM is the only thing that gets me close to the feeling of buying something legal. If is there on STEAM and I want it, then I will end up buying it, even with the currency difference.
Pirates offer a free service, thats the most important part. You dont have to pay for what you want to play. It serves me well to say that I somethimes dont have access to videogames. But I didnt bought an M3 for my nintendo DS because Iam cheap, a copy of Tetris DS was at a mall for 90 USD. You imagine that, walking into the only videogame store and watching this numbers:
Playstation 3 80gb....... 2500 USD.
Nintendo Wii....... 450 USD
Nintendo DS game...... 90 USD (a mariokart ds copy for 100 USD).
Now you go and speak about piracy. You will be feeling like an hypocrate just like I do, but you will understand that there is no way around this issue unless::
a) the goverment stops taxing everything.
b) the industry gives a fuck.
So now is the goverment too... you see? is never that easy.
