LONG BLOG

Where Retro went wrong.

   0
Alright. It's been too long since I've sat down and written anything really insightful so I thought I should get cracking on it so here you go. Today's topic, where Retro Studios went wrong. This is an article I've had rolling around in my head for awhile and have had a real hard time getting around sitting down and putting it down onto binary paper.

Anyone that's ever read any of my articles knows that I adore all things Metroid. That's not to say however that I don't know when something is horribly horribly wrong. And there was a glaring flaw in the Prime series. What is that flaw you ask? Samus.

What I don't understand is how it happened. Retro Studios actually got the whole issue right in the first Prime game. After that it was it was all down hill from there. Now I'm not saying that they got the formula wrong. First person or not they were Metroid games through and through Hunters excluded however that's a rant for a different article. Where they went wrong with Samus was in the end game presentation. Now like I said before, The first Prime game got it right. You got to the end of the game and Samus tears off her helmet and looks over the burning wreckage of the planet and looks weary. And at that moment you connect with her like you never could throughout the entire rest of the game. You see her and you understand that like you she just underwent a major ordeal. And that's what the game was. It's not just an experience, it's an ordeal. You trek along for ten or twenty hours and you see the remains not just an extinct species, but the remains of the culture that raised you. And to find out that they saw it coming and saw you coming and left you a trail of bread crumbs so that you could help put their souls at peace. That's an extremely emotionally draining experience, and when that helmet comes off at the end of it all you see all that on her face and you connect with that.

Like I said, I know Nintendo wanted to present a unified concept of Samus but why not continue to use the zero suit Samus from Hunters that at least looked human if nothing else. I'll never understand how such a brilliant company could fail at something so basic. What's worse is that they didn't just screw it up. What gets me is that they had the right answer the first time around and then tossed it out in favor of something excruciatingly worse after they had nailed perfectly the first time around. That ladies and gentlemen is where Retro went wrong.
