So I'm trying to quit smoking and beat Mega Man 9 at the same time...

It's really hurting me, this damn game. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here, but I'm really having a hard time with Mega Man 9. It's undoubtedly the hardest game I've played in a very long time, although I suppose one can make a great case for Ikaruga, which I've never actually beaten. And to make matters worse, I've also been trying to quit smoking.

As many (Side note: Do enough people read my blog to make it worthy of the term "many"? Or am I just an asshole?) of you may have guessed, things are not going well. I thought I would be able to beat this game in a day or two, as I remember being able to beat quite a few levels from the early Mega Man games when my little brother owned the Anniversary Collection for the GameCube. But apparently, I've either lost all gaming skills I had or the game really is that difficult. I'm inclined to take the former but I'm not really sure here. How bout you Destructoid? Is the game truly that hard? Is it harder than the original games? It's certainly causing me to smoke a fuckton of cigarettes, which was not my intended goal. Oh well, at least I tried.

Anyway, other than the crushing sense of futility I get when I play the game and die constantly, it's actually pretty enjoyable. At least, it can be enjoyable. When I'm on a roll and doing a perfect run through a level, the game is at it's best, proving to have highly satisfying core mechanics and design. This is only compounded by the feeling of triumph you experience after successfully beating a level that you've failed on numerous occasions thus far. It's a rare feeling, something only an old-school game like produces for me. This may have something to do with the fact that I suck at a lot of those games, but it also has a lot to do with the design of the game. I personally have made it my "quest" to beat the damn game, and it may take me a long time. Perhaps if the wife would stop talking to me and cheering me on, which is really just a distraction, I'd be able to get somewhere.

Anyway, I like the game, and I'd certainly recommend it to anybody on the fence, although I think most of us probably already know if we'd enjoy it or not.

And in case you were wondering how bad I really am at the game, I've spent like 4 solid hours with this game and have only beaten Galaxy Man and Splash Woman. I almost beat Plug Man once. Yes, I suck.

Have a good one, Destructoid.

Hello there Destructoid. I don't game as much as I used to when I was an extremely active member of the website. I've had a 3rd kid as opposed to the 2 I had back when I joined and I've discovered that there are other things to do besides play video games. But I'm still a gamer for life.

Wii U

Xbox 360

PS Vita

Decent PC for gaming

My Favorite Games:

I used to have a list here but honestly I've changed my mind quite a bit over the years. I played Chrono Trigger again like I do ever year or 2 and decided that it's dialogue, like many old (and many new) JRPGs, was just too shitty and juvenile for me to actually take seriously anymore. I guess I'm just getting old.

My favorite games in no particular order are Resident Evil 4, God of War, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past,Final Fantasy Tactics, Batman Arkham Asylum, and Chrono Cross. Pretty sure I've forgotten a few games I might remember when asked what my favorite games are in the future. It changes a lot.

This website used to be the best on the internet. Hopefully it will get back to that point, or close, some day soon. I'll probably never fully leave anyway.
