Even though I know they are physically impossible,
It's a known fact that I love mecha.
From purusing /m/ on a daily basis
To making sure I watch a series each month.
I've been around the block from Aura Battler Dunbine to Zone of the Enders, but sometimes folks ask (okay, it happened twice), what are my
Well that, ALLLLMOST as hard as choosing a favorite child. (Actually, scratch that, how overdone is that phrase?)
But usually, I get hooked into a show just for its opening. If you have a catchy song, chances are, I'm gonna sit around for the ride. So let's count down my personal 13 favorite Mecha Openings. Wait? Why 13? That's a good question.
And don't worry if you aren't familiar with two or three of these series on this list. I'm just REALLY into Giant Robots.
13. Hemisphere - RahXephon
Being a real soothing song for a show all about its choice of music, images, references, and timing. It really works. This is the song Maaya Sakamoto was popular for before Macross Frontier's "Triangular."
12. Yume-Iro Cheisā (Dream-Colored Chaser) - Metal Armor Dragonar
A personal favorite, you don't get many openings like this anymore of the heroes sorting out to pop music. Made after the main Gundam universe ended, this cult favorite has an opening with an distinct sound.
11. ANIME JA NAI (It's Not an Anime) - Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
While known to be the least serious and possibly the one of the least liked Universal Century Gundam series, this opening's annoying chorus and strange lyrics give it some merit. You can tell you've come a long way into mecha anime when you've started out hating this song, but now love it.
10. Theme of Getter Robo - Getter Robo
Now you're thinking with Nostalgia. Over the years, this song has been the quintessential hotblooded old school anime song (well, along with the Mazinger Z theme), and it's overuse in Super Robot Wars makes sure no one will forget it.
9. Shinkon Gattai Godannar! (God & Soul Combination Godannar!) - Godannar
It's the 2000s and its been awhile since a really old school sounding robot opening has been heard. This one takes us back to the monster of the week days with this raw Japanese flavor. Plus, it's a really good show, that will make you disapointed when it's over.
8. You Get to Burning - Martian Successor Nadesico
Like Dragonar's opening, this one takes the cake for catchy rhythms and an engrish chorus line.
7. Groovin' Magic - Aim for the Top 2! Diebuster
Being the most DIFFERENT sounding opening in this list, Groovin' Magic accents Gainax's post FLCL style very well. Being jazzy, bubbly, and cute at the same time, it almost contrasts some of the darker themes of the anime itself. Plus, it'll make you wonder what the hell the show is about.
And now let's take a break for Honorable Mentions:
*INFORMATION HIGH - Macross Plus
Considered the theme song for this famous set of OVAs. This song is perfect for those soul searching, hallucination inducing moments. 1994's Macross Plus was a real jaw dropping trip into Shinichiro Watanabe's mind before Cowboy Bebop, and this song sets a real mood for our ideas on how real Artifical Intellegence really is. SPOILERS!
*FLY HIGH - Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
Not really the Opening, but one of the most hotblooded fights in anime history. 1988's Gunbuster had only more really full on fighting scene, but it was completely worth it. Featuring a kill count of 250 million monsters with the song "FLY HIGH" in the background would easily put it on the list if it were an opening. SPOILERS!
6. Shonen HEART - Pslams of the Planet, Eureka Seven
Let's face it, all the Eureka Seven Openings were pretty good (well, except maybe the third). But something about Home Made KAZOKU's Shonen Heart gives the series' music based feel an awesome twist. Plus, the song is awesome by itself.
5. HEATS - Change!! Getter Robo!
While not entirely in sync with the video footage, this song is suprisingly good (at least in my opinion), gives an green ranger theme/anthem like feeling that I can't let go off. tl;dr I love this song.
4. FLYING IN THE SKY - G Gundam
Not only is the opening in sync, and fun to watch, the song and the show are great. That pretty much sums it up.
3. King Gainer Over - Overman King Gainer
This song takes the cake for catchy openings and it even brings back "The Monkey", while the show itself is okay, the song is quite excellent. MEET THE NEW OVERMAN KING GAINER!
2. Zankoku na Tenshi no Tēze (Cruel Angel's Thesis) - Neon Genesis Evangelion
Being on my ipod main setlist for so long, this song couldn't go without mention. Famous for being the most overused, overheard, over karaoked theme song for a robot show, you knew it had to come at some point. Funny that the creator originally wanted an all male
orchestrational dirge for the opening.
1. Yuusha Oh Tanjou!! (The King of Braves is Born!!) - The King of the Braves, GaoGaiGar
A good opening is one you watch over and over and never hit the skip button on your remote when you see it. This is that opening. Not only does it get me in the mood for the show, it's catchy and I find myself singing along all the time. DIIIVVVIIIIDDDIIINNGG DDRRIIIVVVAHHHHHH!!!!
So there you have it, my favorite openings. What? Were you expecting Sora Iro Days or something... yeah, it's an okay song, but there are better shows with better choices. Maybe some of these openings will convince you to watch some of these shows. Or maybe not. Either way, I'm done, keep rockin' baby.
P.S. If anyone asks, my favorites units in no particular order:
1. God Gundam
2. Shin Getter Robo
3. Genesic GaoGaiGar
