Zynga offering a pricy V-Day ring for FarmVille crops photo

Edible flowers and plush teddy bears aren't the typical add-on fair for Zynga Game Network's FarmVille, but that doesn't mean the studio isn't offering something special for those who wish to buy their hopelessly addicted loved ones a Valentine's Day gift.

Enter the "Unwither Ring," a 40-something dollar gift that you can give whomever until February 14th. As described by Social Game Central, the virtual item is a bit of a game breaker -- the person using it will never have to worry about their crops withering if they choose to step away from the game for a few hours. We're of the mind that this is a great gift. After all, there is a world outside the office. But others, those without the ring namely, are apparently thinking otherwise. What's your take?

Completely ridiculous.

I've never spent anywhere near that much on a free to play game (especially not on an item that essentially ruins any reason for playing). Not even on Gunbound back in the day!

Fuck paying a company just to be better at it. Getting good at a game should be based on skill not finacial wealth.

40 dollars for a virtual farm that I'll probably never use once, I don't know, REALITY sets in.

Sure it's a cool gift to receive maybe, but if anyone gave that to their lover for Valentine's Day they deserve to be decked. You can get your girl a lot of good V-day gifts with $40: a nice dinner, a couple movies, a couple dozen roses...but man.

I played Farmville for a couple weeks last summer, for the hell of it. I didn't even realize people still played it, let alone spent REAL currency on it.

It's amazing that people would pay money to play Facebook games.

So what about paying for upping skills in games like Tiger Woods on the 360, or PS3? What about buying multiplayer maps that other players who don't want to buy them can't play on those maps? You have a advantage over those people? What about people buying meanings things for their Avatars? So don't act like only casual gamers are stupid enough to fall for this, because so called hardcore gamers are just as stupid. Is this stupid, and pointless, yes it is. I have played FarmVille and I haven't paid one cent on it. Its really is free to play, but if you want some of the benefits, than you have to pay for them, but you don't have to, if you don't want to.

@PEICanada7: Map packs and avatar clothes don't unbalance a game. The cash shops in 'free' MMOs toe the line slightly when selling XP increasing or drop chance enhancing items, but ultimately those things don't completely alter the state of the game. This, however, is akin to the developers saying "For $40, you can have infinite health." In a multiplayer setting, that tends to skew things just a tad.

People who want the ring will have it. People unwilling to pay for the ring won't. Zynga still laughs all the way to the bank.
