Don’t expect zombies to appear in
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. As explained by lead multiplayer designer Todd Alderman at a recent press event, Infinity Ward isn’t down with breaking their game’s fiction with the inclusion of otherworldly creatures or objects. It simply isn’t what Infinity Ward wants to do with this game, he said, but the studio is open to it in the future (with a different game, silly).
“We like to keep it consistent and in the same universe,” Alderman told
NowGamer.com, when asked to share his thoughts about the zombies in
Call of Duty: World at War.
“It depends on what it is. For us it didn’t fit in our game. We have Spec Ops which is our off-the-storyline path, but it’s just not our bag really. We like to keep it consistent and in the same universe, not to say that we wouldn’t do something like that in the future, but for what we are doing right now it’s just not something we’d do. “
Alderman went on to say that the goal was to have components of the game compliment each other. In his words, “if you have ray-guns and teleporters it’s not going to help.”
The apparent success of the “Nazi Zombie” mode in
World at War challenges that thought, but we like it when a developer sticks with the game’s universe. Think about how terrible
Uncharted would have been if Naughty Dog suddenly dropped aliens or whatever into the later chapters.
Honestly, war in Korea. When suddenly! Cuntbluthering aliens come out of no where.
No, really, all the good bits before it immediately ceased to exist. It was just crap.
I hope that last bit about Uncharted was a joke.
Though I hope IW try something different, their enemy AI ain't exactly brilliant, either. Respawning enemy is not a perfect substitution for truly smart ones. I remembered that months ago they talk about cut infinite respawning from MW2, but they don't mention this any more, I'm a little worried here. Must be hard to resist, given they have "Infinity" in the name.
Since Indiana Jones already dealt with a lot of religious mythology in the "classic" sense of the term, it made sense to me include an ancient example that, yes, may indeed involve aliens.
Didn't stop the movie from sucking dick thanks to what I like to call the "George Lucas green screening the crap out of a movie despite the fact conventional set pieces and effects would make it far more believable." See also: the Star Wars Prequels.
Market Saturation. It's as simple as that.
People will buy WAW for Nazi Zombies (which will still be out, and selling), and buy Modern Warfare 2 for everything else. Also, for Modern Warfare 3/4, THEN they can bust out Terrorist Zombies.
Now where's mah Final Fantasy DLC? T_T
Come on guys, you rather shoot down endless cannon fodder or feel like you're in a fast-paced, John Woo climax scene with your bud?
I'd be getting way way less out of this game without a zombies mode, plain and simple.
It has been confirmed that there are a finite amount on enemies in each level, so you don't have to worry =)
@artha14 & KCchiefsFan: Is this all gamers care about these days?
That makes as much as sense as zombies, aliens, or vampires. :/
Anyways Im glad about this decision. The zombie mode in WAW didnt do anything for me. Anyways its not like fans of Nazi zombies in WAW will have to wait long, only next november and that mode will for sure be back. Not to mention, Tryarch will most likely keep supporting it with DLC.
i actually saw on the military channel, they were doin a documentary how this group of soldiers were pinned down in a building and were surrounded by enemy combatants
You mean Pavlov's House?

Fo' shizzle? I always hear terrorist like to stay under the grid until they decide to blow shit up. I don't claim to be an expert though.
I for one just want the game to be fun. I actually liked the zombies on WaW and I'm not a CoD fan at all. As long as it doesn't fuck with the main plot what's the worst that could happen?
...ha!
Infinity Ward doesn't need Nazi Zombies, but they should include some kind of fun bonus co-op game mode. Do you think that if Activision forced IW to include it then Alderman wouldn't have some equally lame excuse as to why it is there?(Because he wouldn't say they included it to make more money of course)
All the time in Nazi zombie games I hear people say "How awesome would nazi Zombies be in Modern Warfare!?" I realize that 'copying' Treyarch by including zombies would be a sign of weakness for IW, since they are the "Superior" developer team.
I think Alderman, as well as everyone commenting like "It's not neccessary, zombies!/LOLWUT!>/1!!" is missing the point. Nazi Zombies was a game within a game, like Firefight or Horde, Nazi Zombies made certain friends of mine buy the games for it alone. IW needs to "WOW!" us with a lot of content this time around, because despite the review score Dtoid gave WoW, it was and is a great game.
I don't mean to be a smart ass, but how is more value for the consumer "dumb"?
They're not taking anything out of the game, and I've spent a good 40 hours on Nazi Zombies alone.
I disagree. Breaking with the game's fiction to make a multiplayer version of portal (personally, I think a break with fiction is an inherent trait of all multiplayer) is much better than sticking with the game's fiction and deliberately not supplying portal.
Of course, a portal lover like myself doesn't actually like Call of Duty, but an awesome experience is much more important to customers than a consistent fictional world. Case in point - Mario. They just add in characters, gameplay elements, and worlds with a complete disreguard for whether or not Mario would have done it before. They added Frog Suits, Yoshis, powerstars, pintas, and lumas with a complete disinterest in whether or not it meshes with super mario history, and it works, sells, and is fun.
Of course, this is coming from someone who thinks a story driven game is a game that doesn't have good enough gameplay to be driven by anything else.
That is the single most dumbest thing I've ever read out loud. And that is competing with lines from Terri SHaivos memoir, which was really just "dRERPPP DREPP DERRRRPP" over and over again for about 200 pages.
But in all honesty, saying waw had an excellent story is pretty much dumber than Terri shaivo.
Before everyone flames me for my opinion, I haven't played much of W@W, but I've played enough to know that I'm just a little tired of WWII in general and maybe that hindered my experience with the game. Nazi Zombies is great, but to reiterate my previous point, I think it's more of a novelty than anything. Without it, W@W probably wouldn't be played as much as it is online. However, I'm glad that IW acknowledges that they don't need to include the mode to keep people playing, as the rest of the game could do that.
seriously, imagine how much extra space they saved up for something better
Let's suppose that Nazi Zombies is a novelty, and people bought WaW solely for that one mode of play.
That means the one mode of play is so well-liked, it is in some cases worth more than the rest of the game combined.
It's not about what Infinity Ward needs to do to get people to play online. It's about making a game people want to play. Of all the moronic things a developer could say, removing the single most popular game mode from the previous entry in your series because it doesn't work with the CoD:MW fiction? If I were his boss, I would demand that Zombies be put in because not only does the developer recognize the value of it, but in spite of this recognition he is opting out of creating the type of customer experience that will both bring people in and bring people back to the newest entry to the CoD series.
I don't care if Nazi Zombies was a novelty or the only reason people bought WaW, if anything the latter point proves that nazi zombies will increase sales and satisfy significantly more customers than having it excluded. Video game design is about selling games, and you can't do that if you handicap your series' appeal for minor artistic reasons.
"If I were his boss I would demand that Zombies be put in "
I just explained to you why it's not in MW:2, despite how much consumers want it. Modern Warfare doesn't "need" nazi zombies yet: when the franchise saturates, they'll bust it out. Hell, it might even be something we didn't think of: Modern Devils, or the like.
@topcatyo
FUCK YEA! What's hilarious about that ending is the fact that it ripped off the film The Descent, and no one noticed.
