MAG is a PS3 exclusive game, and you all know what that means. Yes, it's time for a developer to claim that the game can only be done on the PS3! Declaring that only a few other systems could handle the massiveness of this Massive Action Game, lead designer Scott Rudi openly wonders if MAG would work as a multiplatform game.
"I don't even know if it's possible for multiplatform," states Rudi. "We're using so many architectural features unique to the PS3, like the Cell system, that I would be hard pressed to -- and I'm not a programmer or anything -- but from what I've been hearing, this is what the PS3 can do and few others can."
Still, Rudi is not without hope, stating that he'd "love to see someone else try" and produce the MAG experience on Xbox 360. While we wait for someone to try that out, feel free to gawp at our MAG review and make baseless assumptions about the game and the author like you've all been doing.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
wait no, im not
I wouldn't call my remarks a shit storm, I was just saying that they're treating MAG like Deus Ex, when the highest review score that it has gotten so far from any site is 8/10.
If all you're looking for is shiney graphics, stick to Call of Knifey: Glitch Borefare 2. If you can't understand how many boundaries MAG pushes you're fucking blind.
I think it's a case of, the code wouldn't translate as the architecture is so different. no one is saying that other consoles aren't good enough, just different.
Chill out Xbox defense force.
Game.
Look at ANY FPS on both platforms. Sometimes I'll log in Modern Warfare 2 on both consoles, only to find 50K+ more people on Xbox Live.
I'm no graphics whore, and MAG is not a great game. I wouldn't call it BAD, but it certainly isn't great. I don't mind saying that the PS3 has a few really good games, but MAG isn't one of them.
Now if the problem is solely the number of people the game can host, then I'm sure that can be easily solved. If the 360 can play MMO games, surely the 360 can handle MAG. Hell the DreamCast did it years ago.
Also, Inb4 fanboys and trolls.
Lol. This website's readership is comprised of manchildren.
*shrugs
They have the better online service.
In any case, i'm more excited about other PS3 exclusives who privilege the single player experience: GOW III, Heavy Rain & Yakuza 3
Settle down Beavis. He is right though. I think we all tire, on every platfor, the grandstanding that developers do from their game. It is a solid shooter, but it doesn't walk on water.
Wow, was that Sexualchocolate that just said that?!?! Shit!
Seriously though, it doesn't seem like too demanding a game, just some seriously clever netcode and good prioritising of netcode over graphics, with very satisfying and deep gameplay.
A good measure of this is how my PS3 has a busted and noisy fan. MAG very rarely put it into serious "shit i got to cool myself down set fans on HARDCORE!!!" Whereas Modern Wankness 2 will quickly put my fan into HARDCORE mode.
Doesn't mean it's better, it's almost a shame that such a shite game can demand so much from the hardware while a far far better game (MAG) doesn't.
Cannot wait to get back to OIC status. Although calling in strafing runs as Platoon Leader is the bollocks.
Anyone fighting for Raven or Valor will soon feel the pain of my steel rain! - just give me a couple of days to get back to platoon leader.....
Basically what I'm saying is that I'm cool with 8vs8 or 16v16 or whatever, so long as the game is bringing something truly interesting or exciting to the table. More people is not very exciting, not in a "HOLY SHIT DID YOU SEE THE WAY THIS AMAZING NEW WEAPON TORE THAT DUDES HEAD OFF!?!?!?!?" kind of way.
It's cool and a nice feature, but that's all it really is: A feature. At it's core having that many people is just an old feature that's been beefed up.
Think about it: In 15 years we might be playing online FPS with 1000 people at once, like some REAL full scare war shit. And nobody will remember MAG. Why? Because it's just another online shooter only with more people to shoot online.
Still can't beat MAG - MEN ASS GRABBER
It takes everything i want from a shooting game, puts it into some fucking awesome brilliantly designed maps, gives it a point and a reason, gives you a great sense of camaraderie (*sp) and not only that, let's 256 players play together!
It walks on my water..
uh, what?
Seriously though after a week playing MAG you will feel like part of your faction. playing as Russian one minute, then as yanks, then as Russian again and not caring if your team wins or not is just not good enough anymore.
Faction loyalty has flipped fPS games on their head for me. It's no longer Kill the red guys, it's now kill those Raven scumbags or those Valor dicks! Alah Akbah!
Hell I'm looking for the bits i need to dress my 3 week old son in a SVER outfit.
Pics will follow if i find all the bits i need. SVER baby FTW!
I'm not sure why console fans are super excited with the high count, honestly. Battlefield and various other PC games have been throttling high player counts for nearly a decade.
I think MAG will suffer the same fate as Planetside (another high player count FPS with three factions - also with Sony!): offering high player counts, but nothing really revolutionary or original, and thus, not a blockbuster.
I mean, it would sell a TON of copies (it's pretty much proven if you put a decent shooter on the 360, it'll sell). The only downside I could see is they'd be competing with the almighty Halo (and MW2), which might make it more of a passing fad rather then long lasting (say what you want, but the PS3 still doesn't have a "definitive FPS" like the Xbox does with Halo).
Still, wouldn't mind seeing it on the Xbox. The demo/beta was...well, actually not that great from what I played, but from Jim's review it looked like they made it a lot better since then.
i think it will make's the average player, a player who have real interested in the MAG concept and not just ranking Kill in the newest whatever FPS...
@Jim, well played, sir. Plus I have to say I like your review even if we won't see the full scale awesomeness of this game for at least a month or two. Then we'll see how good the game is when it is a lot easier to find massive matches. Gunna pick up my copy in a few hours after class.
@ everyone raging their opinions, if you don't like that game, then fine. There are other shooters out there. People have different tastes in shooters, and this is just another flavor.
online is so boring, had enough of it on pc years ago, you just get bitchy teenagers shouting at each other..yawn!! il sit next to my real friends and play split screen any day,,online is bull shit!
Why do people talk like 256 players ON A CONSOLE is nothing new or exciting? Or that an FPS game needs some kind of gimmick. I'm all for this SOLID shooter, with ranks and command status, support weapons and a massive amount of players myself.
I like my shooters without fucking stupid gimmicks, however it seems some people only like shooters with gimmicks which they call "innovation".
killcams - killstreaks - vehicles - super powers - super jumpy pads (yuck) - shiney sheild pickups - invisibility pickups - piss bottles - all that shit makes most games silly.
MAG is all about realistic team play on a massive scale and that, my friends, it pulls of FLAWLESSLY.
I love getting image tributes....
Thank you for that. I almost forgot what the real sexualchocolate looked like.
I know I sound a tad anti-PS3 here but we get this same fucking story at least twice a week. Shut up and make your fucking games Sony devs.
I wish this game success for it is an awesome concept that I would dearly love to see rewarded and replicated.
Last time I checked none of you are programmers/designers that make large scale multiplayer video games. Why don't all of you just shut the fuck up. I bet the ones doing all the complaining don't have a single creative bone in their body. Everytime a PS3/360 exclusive comes out you people have to shoot it down because its not on your favorite console. Shouldn't have this stopped years ago? Or am I still in 06?
"Nobody is drooling and begging and kicking for your game Zipper."
Actually I know one guy that is.
It's not true on any other level.
I will never be as cool as you :/
It really is quite a technical feat to have 256 players on the same map, with no lag on a console game.
(and luckily Zipper is a subsidiary of Sony so the tech will likely be shared and could be applied to other games... but yeah, it's EXTREMELY unlikely the tech would be shared with a multiplatform dev.) :)
...yawn.
you completely missed the point, scott was talkin about the technical aspect of having 256 players online
noone is talkin about the quality of the game, which isnt really bad
EVERY online multiplayr game should have killcams. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
