Zero Suit Samus enjoys her downtime in upcoming art book photo

Last summer, artist Chris Furniss posted a piece of Samus art a day for a whole month, depicting ol' Sammy out of her armor and enjoying her day-to-day activities when she's not out patrolling the galaxy. It's a candid glimpse into the life of just an ordinary gal -- she surfs the Web, visits the laundromat, hangs out with friends, and enjoys the great outdoors. Very sweet indeed!

Since finishing "31 Days of Zero Suit Samus," Chris has wanted to gather all the days into a compilation book. Plans are finally underway, and he's even going to include some extra pieces. In addition, a few other web artists will be contributing to the book as well, such as the always jubilant Ashley Davis, Maré Odomo, Zac Gorman, and Ted Martens. They're showing a lot love for our favorite bounty hunter, even if some aren't following the "Zero Suit Samus" theme (for shame!).

In the gallery, I've posted the current contributions as well as a selection of Chris' originals. Hit up his site to check out the remainders.

Awesome He's going to make it into a book. I thought about buying some prints, but couldn't decide because I liked almost all of them.

I, for one, vastly prefer "cute" Samus art to "sexy" Samus art.

Ok, I'll admit, at first, trying to turn Samus Aran, one of the hottest females in the video games industry, into something "cute" usually puts ire in my fire.

But after seeing just a couple of these pictures, I HAVE to buy the book now (hopefully on Amazon...);
It's just TOO adorable!
Thanks for the post :)

I prefer cute samus as well. Didn't like that sue had "mega tits" in smash bros brawl. I hope I wrote this right. The allstate add precents me from seeing what I'm typing.

I'm happy for the guy, but how is this legal? These are copyrighted characters and if he's profiting from them, that seems illegal to me.

@randombullseye

He made the art with his own effort, he's entitled to it's profits. It's like making a giant painting of a Coca-Cola bottle. Yeah, someone owns the design, but someone else took the effort to make the painting.

It's art; art is protected.

He's not profiting from official illustrations. He's making original art based on an intellectual property which falls under fair use.

I'm pretty sure by now it's foolish to criticize anyone for making money off of fan works. If companies were as cutthroat as people seem to claim, we wouldn't have fan works period.

Technically, unless he got permission from Nintendo, this is illegal, as he is selling work based exclusively on IP that he did not create. Fair use allows other people's IP to be used under parody (a very tricky definition, legally) and allows for other people's IP to be included in actual original works (in other words, Ryan North can reference Batman in officially sold Dinosaur Comics merchandise because the main focus of the work is Ryan's IP and not DC's).

However, the good news for fan works is that the law can only be enacted by the copyright holder, and most large companies simply don't bother enforcing it on fanworks because it really doesn't divert profits, since they're not offering a competing product and, honestly, it probably generates more interest in their IP, so he's probably okay. But this is the reason why cease-and-desist orders can be delivered for fan games and other big products.

To be more clear: it's specifically the "for profit" part that makes it illegal. Fair use also covers fanart and the like if it's done entirely not-for-profit, which is how sites like Overclocked Remix can exist.

Oh, I should also add (not for the first time, wishing there was an edit button), I certainly hope Chris doesn't have any trouble with this (or even better, obtained permission from Big N to sell them) because I absolutely love these. They can make me smile even on the worst days and I would love to have them in book form.

Not quiet.

Transformative works can be profited from legally. The key aspects of fair use is in how a derived work affects the original property's capacity for profit, and how much of the original work was used.

Simply profiting from something doesn't invalidate it's fair use of the property being referenced.

This work obviously doesn't use any of the original property's assets other than the likeness, and doesn't damage, diminish or negatively (keyword) affect the original property's capacity for profit in any way.

So no, not illegal. In fact, the legality of the action doesn't get defined until the owner of the property makes a claim on it.

In the header pic, she is plugging her nose to jump into the water. Personally, I feel this is an affront to women in general, labelling them all as so weak they must plug their noses when jumping into water. She's supposed to be a strong, independent bounty hunter, not some weak-willed pushover who needs her nasal cavities protected by a hand. I can't believe they would be willing to put something so offensive and downright sexist in their book. Boycott this swill.

@ElConrado: Cool. Do you have any citations on that? Not that I'm doubting you, it's just I've been reading a lot of stuff about copyright and IP laws lately and there's a lot of information out there and a lot of people saying conflicting things (and/or stupid-sounding things) and I just want to understand it better.

I usually don't cite Wikipedia, but since most what I know about copyright law comes from my lawyer, it'll have to do for now
