In yesterday's reveal of Zennin Shiboudes, the new escape-the-room visual novel from Chunsoft, Dtoider OriginalGman mentioned that he thought the game resembled 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors a little too closely. The Vita / 3DS multiplat was tagged as a spiritual successor to 999, but I have to agree that there were quite a few direct similarities.
Now that the trailer above has been released, it's pretty clear that there is nothing "spiritual" about Zennin Shiboudes -- it is most definitely a sequel! There's a person dressed up as Zero, doors painted with single-digital numerals, and even those infernal watches! Whether this all means that the game is a direct continuation of events from 999, albeit with a new cast of "players," or a completely independent tale set in the same universe that uses the Nonary Game as a template is still up in the air.
One lingering question remains: what the f*ck is up with that freaky-looking rabbit!?
The director of 999 said that at the of the last game, Akane disappeared in order to prepare for the next stages of her plan. So I'm guessing this probably has something to do with that.
looks cool, if the game will be released in europe i'm getting 3DS version. if not i will simply import it and wait for cheaper Vita since i doubt this will be a title that will be on store shelfs for years or even months.
So glad this is being released for PS Vita as well! May have to import it, if it doesn't get a NA release. I missed out on 999, because I haven't been interested in my DS for awhile now.
I think I suffered a nerdgasm. I hope that this get localized, 999 is easily one of my favorites of all the times, if this game can deliver the same amount of tension than 999 then I'm going to be really happy.
Ok Tony, you have eased my concerns with this sweet trailer. Direct sequel or not, this looks hella tight and I'm digging the 3D models. I am all the way onboard.
I really loved the 2D art of the previous game, but it looks like cutscenes will certainly be more cinematic, which is usually a good thing.
If they do go all out on the cutscenes The tariler at 0:44 seems to indicate this is the case), I just hope they don't skimp on the awesome and descriptive writing.
SPOILERS:
When *someone* died in the bathroom, the lengths at which they went to describe the smell and visual made my stomach turn. "yellow fat drooping down the wall like slugs." UGH!
@Tony Ponce: Currently studying Japanese, could use this game as a studying supplement as well. I'm getting close to being at the beginner-intermediate level, but still have a ways to go. I may be able to read some of it depending on when it comes out, we'll probably find out at TGS! :D
YES! Finally the loose ends will get tied!...and then we'll get fun new loose ends to play with! Who is zero? Is the boob lady Alice? Did Santa finally get the sexchange he always secretly wanted, or does phi just happen to look like him? Are they cousins or something? I have to know! I don't think I can hold out for much longer. I need this game yesterday! Get on it aksys!.... I'm waiting. *_*
@ Patrick Hancock
Yeah, I love that link! But I already read through the answers and I already know who zero is in 999, but I was wondering if zero is still zero in this game. And by boob lady I meant the new Egyptian looking character in the lineup (who by the way, could also be one of Lotus's daughters!). Thanks for the link though I think I'll read through it again. :D
@ tmak94
Actually, I think that is Clover. She has a pink clover tattoo on her cheek! (poor clover, then she has to play the nonary game yet again). The tall dude in the blue overalls could also be an older Junpei, but then again, that's just wishful thinking on my part.
I so hope the robot dude turns out to be 7. I love 7 he needs to be in the game again... and Santa, he has to make a comeback too. He was AWESOME!
