Zelda: Spirit Tracks will appeal to a 'wider age group' photo

Young or old, it seems gamers everywhere love The Legend of Zelda series. When the new Nintendo DS offering The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks was announced at Game Developers Conference earlier this year, everyone cheered.

So it’s curious to see that, in its latest financial report, Nintendo goes out of its way to specify that Spirit Tracks "will appeal to a wider age group of people." Am I missing something, or doesn’t the Zelda series already have that appeal? I played The Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987; I was 9-years-old and I had a blast. The curious usage of words might lead some to believe that Spirit Tracks will be a watered-down experience, designed to appeal to non-traditional, but that may not be case in the end. There’s little doubt the game will be great; if it’s not, our pitchforks and torches are coming out of storage.

It’s also interesting to note that Nintendo is still saying that Spirit Tracks is a tentative name, so we could be calling it something else before the game’s release "in the latter half of this calendar year." Might I suggest The Legend of Zelda: For Babies and Your Grandmother? I kid!

In terms of financials, if you’re interested in crunching the numbers, I've included them in the gallery. Enjoy that!

Haven't all the Zelda's been pretty universally appealing?

Since this is a statement meant for investors, I don't think there's cause for alarm.

To gamers, it sounds like Nintendo is suggesting Spirit Tracks will be even more "casual" than Phantom Hourglass. Investors have likely never played Phantom Hourglass, let alone a single videogame in their lives, and aren't taking this as a statement of contrast like gamers are. "Wider age group" simply means "better investment opportunity." I'm fairly confident that, while Spirit Tracks sure as hell won't be Majora's Mask 2, it's definitely not going to be any more watered down than Phantom Hourglass was.

I feel like that that's just the sort of jargon they throw into financial things to appease stockholders and whatnot. Like you said, the Zelda series has always appealed to a very wide audience. I'm not worried about Zelda Babyz just yet.

Phantom Hourglass sucked and I think this game is tied down to the same tracks.

Hovering over it is Nintendo twirling its thin black mustache and laughing maniacally.

I was hoping this game would be a little more hardcore than Phantom Hourglass. I found that game to be on the short and easy side.

Hearing that the game "will appeal to a wider age group of people" definitely makes me less optimistic about that...

I still stick to my opinion that Phantom Hourglass is the best Zelda game since Ocarina of Time. I can't WAIT for this game. :)

"There’s little doubt the game will be great"

Really? I'd say there's tons of doubt. Nintendo hasn't exactly had the best track record in recent years. And while "appeal to a wider age group" might not mean anything, this game could still be watered down. I liked Phantom Hourglass. I liked it a lot in fact, more than Twilight Princess and the Minish Cap, which were the only Zelda games I played between Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass (didn't finish either of them). But if PH was watered down anymore it wouldn't have been worth it.

I must be the only person who doesn't like Zelda. Or Mario for that matter.

I loved both Phantom Hourglass and Wind Waker, so I'm pleased that Nintendo is continuing to pursue that iteration of Link. That said, I'm pretty skeptical about this whole Link-is-a-train-conductor thing. I'm worried that this whole train track motif is being used to create a very limited, linear experience that will fly in the face of the themes of exploration and discovery that the Zelda series is known for.

I'm hoping Nintendo will prove me wrong, though. I'm always happy to be wrong if it means I'll get an awesome Zelda game out of it.

I'm with Chad. I had zero excitement for The Phantom Hourglass prior to it's release. The idea of it's touchscreen-only controls really turned me off. I wanted a traditional Zelda experience.

It sat unplayed for weeks. Then I finally put the time in and found a game that reminded me of my beloved NES game moreso than any game that had come since. It's probably my fourth favorite in the series.

Also, since when does making a game easier broaden it's appeal? Appeal is the thing that draws people to a game. The difficulty level is what they find when they get there.

This Zelda really does look like a flop in the making. Is it too late to sign Kevin Costner on?

I also don't like the cartoon-style link, I'll stick with my Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess style thank you.

Spirit tracks basically looks like Phantom Hourglass, but with an additional train. Tbh, making Link a railway conductor in this one is a bad idea. It just doesn't feel like its in the zelda universe now.

They should stick to console stuff for now. The idea of Phantom Hourglass followed by Spirit Tracks with no console iteration in between is frightening.

I don't care if the new Zelda isn't uber-difficult, but I fear that it will bring very little to the table in terms of innovation. For gamers, usually "wider age group," when uttered by Nintendo, is code for "we put minimal amounts of effort into this game and dumbed it down to the point where it's hardly even a game anymore." In the case of Spirit Tracks, I fear that it will mean that Spirit Tracks will basically be a clone of Phantom Hourglass, which would be really stupid. If you're going to build a sequel using the same engine as the previous game, it had sure as hell better be different enough to make it worth purchasing. For example, Majora's Mask was worth purchasing to me because it was almost completely different from Ocarina of Time. But if this is just Phantom Hourglass 1.5, that would be very sad indeed. Don't get me wrong, I loved Phantom Hourglass, but I'm tired of Nintendo selling me the same game over and over again.

If its stylus only its already shit.

That said, I recall Miyamoto saying last year that the core franchises needed to appeal to a wider audience, this is in line with that statement, I for one look forward to dumbed Mario, Zelda and Metroid games and the ensuing spectacle of the fanboys defending it.

The controls worked fine in Phantom Hourglass (save for the rolling). The end.

I want to see more items taking advantage of the touch screen, stuff like the boomarang in the last game was great.

Less blowing out candles using the mic though :|

I can't think of anything a "wider age group" would hate more than having to return to a damn stealth dungeon with a time limit over and over and over again, so this just might be a good thing. We'll see.

Phantom Hourglass was decent. But I'm skeptical of Nintendo these days, they seem to have been talking to George Lucas or something.

Not surprised if "will appeal to a wider age group of people" turns out as Link ramming his train through innocent monsters.
