Zelda producer wants to make something that's not Zelda photo

Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma would like to make a game that isn't Zelda, and one can hardly blame him. The poor fellow has been working on Hyrule-flavored titles since The Ocarina of Time in 1998. That's plenty for anybody.

"Yeah, the truth of it is I always want to work on something new," he confessed. "It just turns out that as I’m coming up with these ideas along the way, I realize, 'Y’know, this could really work on a Zelda game.' And it sort filters back into it and in the end, we come back into another Zelda project.

"So in some ways, it’s a bit of a challenge for me personally that Zelda ends up becoming this pool of my ideas and it keeps absorbing the ideas I have and they get integrated back into Zelda games. But that’s just sort of the way it’s flown for me."

Despite his self-confessed challenge, Destructoid has learned that Aonuma actually does have a totally new IP in the works. So far, all we know is that it's called The Begend of Belda. Hopefully we hear more about it soon.

Nintendo needs a new IP. They've been releasing the same games for years.

A new IP would be more exciting than more Zelda.

Go for it Eiji Aonuma, and if Skyward sword sucks will all blame you for dividing your attention to more than one game :)

This sort of comment is as hackneyed and rehashed as much as you claim Nintendo's titles are.

I've never seen the trailer. It was the smile that did it for me. Maybe Nintendo is trying to tell us something.... (answer: Link is going to turn bisexual).

Honestly, I don't care if there is a new IP. However, I'd love to see them take Zelda and do something new with it.

I'd be ok with this. I do love me some Zelda, and I look forward to Skyward Sword. But it would be nice see something new from Aonuma and Miyamoto. A Suda51/Aonuma crossover anyone?

I don't exactly mind him in particular making nothing but Zelda games, but someone at nintendo needs to start working on a new IP. You now realize that the last good IP nintendo made was pikmin (not counting wii sports and all of that crap)

"Begend of Belda" LMFAO, awwww. I had a similar moment when I found out that Sakaguchi's brand-new, non "Final Fantasy" project was called "Last Story." Really, dude?

It's a tough spot to be in. Nothing he does is likely to sell as well as Zelda - still, if he really wants to, I think he should go for it.

Without wanting to sound like a douche, I can't blame him. LoZ games be great but they're pretty much the same game for the past 13 years. That's gotta be frustrating, seeing the stuff over and over again.

Sorry Eiji, but in this current climate, the best you can hope for is making a brand new game and having your publisher slap the Legend of Zelda name on it to reel in the gullible fan demographic.

You can't blame Aonuma or anyone else who has some desire to work on something new after all these years. Being able to handle a great franchise like Zelda must be an honor, but it obviously reaches a point where it gets old and limits your time and pursuit of other personal goals. Not even Miyamoto is tied down to a single franchise. As we know, Miyamoto's even hinted at wanting to make a new mascot-based game from on one his comments last year.

Anyway, Aonuma seems to be working his magic on Skyward Sword well. He and his team have addressed issues like stale gameplay by changing up things like the combat mechanics and controls. In addition, the level design seems like it too has undergone a sort of change by having the overworld to dungeon progression be more seamless along with a new form of transportation via flying. Still not quite sure what else Phi may bring to the table. Of course, there's also a brand new art style and orchestrated music, improved inventory system, and the the likelihood of the Skyward Sword offering a decent sense of challenge unlike Twilight Princess.

I'm looking forward to Batman: Arkham City, Skyrim, Rhythm Heaven, Kirby Wii ,Super Mario 3DS, Starfox 64 3D,and Dark Souls, but Skyward Sword is my most anticipated game of the year.

Have the zelda guy collaborate with Capcom to make a Monster Hunter with platforming puzzler aspects while a Rathalos is charging at you from the other side of the field.

You can go one of three ways;

New IP: It would be great for the Wii-U to start establishing some new titles, especially so that people can see how that controller can work for games.

Strange Ass Zelda Branch Off: I dunno, Bladerunner x Zelda, or Zelda with Steampunk? Something that's complete ass backwards from traditional Zelda, yet shares the same features.

Wind Waker Remake: This is the preferred one. Do it. Please. I'll love you forever.

Aonuma: Hey, I just got this great idea for a new game! The moon is falling towards the Earth, and you have only three days to stop it, but you have to keep going back in time and repeating those same days over and over! Also you wear masks that turn you into different creatures.
Miyamoto: That would be a great Zelda game!
Aonuma: Actually, I kind of wanted it to be a new....
Miyamoto: We'll call it The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

2 years later:

Aonuma: Okay, great idea for a new franchise! It takes place on a huge ocean, and you spend the game sailing from island to island by controlling the wind.
Miyamoto: Great! Hey, you know what series that would be a perfect fit for?
Aonuma: ...The Legend of Zelda?
Miyamoto: Bingo.

3 years later:

Aonuma: So here's the new franchise I have in mind. You're a guy who can turn into a wolf, and...
Miyamoto: ...
Aonuma: ...Zelda it is.

Nintendo in potential new non-casual IP shocker!

Either that or it'll be a Zelda, Mario, Metroid spin-off and they'll go back to drinking cups of tea with Square Enix and laughing about how things haven't really changed since 1987.

Maybe my memory is bad, or maybe it was just a rumor and I didn't follow up, but didn't someone from Nintendo say a year or two ago that the next Zelda would be on set in the future and would be a pretty big departure for the series?

Not that I'm at all invested in the franchise one way or the other, but other than a change in graphical style from time to time, the environments and lore have gone far beyond stale. Something like SUPER FUTURE SPACESHIP LINK could maybe serve the purpose of "new IP" and new Zelda... just a thought.

I would do terrible, shameful, sexy things to Aonuma and Miyamoto if they made a steampunk Zelda game. That would be amazing.

@Gengario

That was hilarious. The last one especially, I can just picture poor old Aonuma hanging his head in resignation.

Zelda is a very flexible franchise. It makes sense that he ends up coming back to it. People complain the shit away about Nintendo rehashes, but if anyone stopped being bitchy about something they chose not to pay for(most complainy pants out there. If you tried it out with an open heart and didn't enjoy it, perfect, your opinion is absolutely valid and boils down to preference and perception of inovation) and actually took the time to enjoy the times and the various changes and evolutions being made, one would see there's way more being done with those franchises than most sequels in the industry.
