Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma would like to make a game that isn't Zelda, and one can hardly blame him. The poor fellow has been working on Hyrule-flavored titles since The Ocarina of Time in 1998. That's plenty for anybody.
"Yeah, the truth of it is I always want to work on something new," he confessed. "It just turns out that as I’m coming up with these ideas along the way, I realize, 'Y’know, this could really work on a Zelda game.' And it sort filters back into it and in the end, we come back into another Zelda project.
"So in some ways, it’s a bit of a challenge for me personally that Zelda ends up becoming this pool of my ideas and it keeps absorbing the ideas I have and they get integrated back into Zelda games. But that’s just sort of the way it’s flown for me."
Despite his self-confessed challenge, Destructoid has learned that Aonuma actually does have a totally new IP in the works. So far, all we know is that it's called The Begend of Belda. Hopefully we hear more about it soon.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Not related to Aonuma but Is Pandora's Tower first party?(new Nintendo ips)
This sort of comment is as hackneyed and rehashed as much as you claim Nintendo's titles are.
Have you seen the trailer? I think he's supposed to be giving off that vibe.
I've never seen the trailer. It was the smile that did it for me. Maybe Nintendo is trying to tell us something.... (answer: Link is going to turn bisexual).
Blame Ganondorf.
YYEEEEEAAAAOK that was bad.
It's a tough spot to be in. Nothing he does is likely to sell as well as Zelda - still, if he really wants to, I think he should go for it.
Now get back to work jerk!
Anyway, Aonuma seems to be working his magic on Skyward Sword well. He and his team have addressed issues like stale gameplay by changing up things like the combat mechanics and controls. In addition, the level design seems like it too has undergone a sort of change by having the overworld to dungeon progression be more seamless along with a new form of transportation via flying. Still not quite sure what else Phi may bring to the table. Of course, there's also a brand new art style and orchestrated music, improved inventory system, and the the likelihood of the Skyward Sword offering a decent sense of challenge unlike Twilight Princess.
I'm looking forward to Batman: Arkham City, Skyrim, Rhythm Heaven, Kirby Wii ,Super Mario 3DS, Starfox 64 3D,and Dark Souls, but Skyward Sword is my most anticipated game of the year.
New IP: It would be great for the Wii-U to start establishing some new titles, especially so that people can see how that controller can work for games.
Strange Ass Zelda Branch Off: I dunno, Bladerunner x Zelda, or Zelda with Steampunk? Something that's complete ass backwards from traditional Zelda, yet shares the same features.
Wind Waker Remake: This is the preferred one. Do it. Please. I'll love you forever.
Then I suppose you haven't seen E3 gameplay footage where he does some weird thing with his tongue right next to Link's head.
Yeah, he's delightfully fruity, this one.
Sure you can come to my house and play tomorrow. BTW my dog ate the Begend of Belda copy, so the game is like cancelled. I swear
Balls.
Miyamoto: That would be a great Zelda game!
Aonuma: Actually, I kind of wanted it to be a new....
Miyamoto: We'll call it The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
2 years later:
Aonuma: Okay, great idea for a new franchise! It takes place on a huge ocean, and you spend the game sailing from island to island by controlling the wind.
Miyamoto: Great! Hey, you know what series that would be a perfect fit for?
Aonuma: ...The Legend of Zelda?
Miyamoto: Bingo.
3 years later:
Aonuma: So here's the new franchise I have in mind. You're a guy who can turn into a wolf, and...
Miyamoto: ...
Aonuma: ...Zelda it is.
Either that or it'll be a Zelda, Mario, Metroid spin-off and they'll go back to drinking cups of tea with Square Enix and laughing about how things haven't really changed since 1987.
Not that I'm at all invested in the franchise one way or the other, but other than a change in graphical style from time to time, the environments and lore have gone far beyond stale. Something like SUPER FUTURE SPACESHIP LINK could maybe serve the purpose of "new IP" and new Zelda... just a thought.
Door #2 for me.
F.y.i., Epona as a motorcycle. Makes me hot!
LMAO. Exactly.
I would do terrible, shameful, sexy things to Aonuma and Miyamoto if they made a steampunk Zelda game. That would be amazing.
@Gengario
That was hilarious. The last one especially, I can just picture poor old Aonuma hanging his head in resignation.
@Jim
You got my hopes up when you said Aonuma was working on a new IP. How naive of me to be excited! You magnificent bastard.
