Your Wii is sad and lonely, says Nielsen photo

Nielsen's State of the Video Gamer study somehow measures a percentage of the total time a console could be used. I don't know how the hell they do that, but their figures show that the Wii has the lowest user activity. Compared to your other game systems, your Wii is kind of sad and lonely.

The Wii owners use their console 6.8 percent of the total time they could have used it. Edge says that this measurement time is from December 2008. In comparison, the Xbox 360 and PS3 have average user percentages of 10.2 and 10.6 respectively.

Are the latter figures good? I don't know! But we do know that the Wii's average usage days were about the lowest, only higher than the GameCube's, at about five days. Granted, the Xbox 360 and PS3 have more features, like movie playback, so it makes sense that use time would be higher. But you still got to feel kind of bad for your Wii.

Oh, you don't? Here's how the study lays it out:

Predominant users of the Wii and GameCube are likely to use these consoles at most once a week and for fewer minutes and the fewest number of sessions compared to the other two groups of consoles.

Is your Wii sad and lonely? My Wii gets a lot of love with Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Dokopon Journey, but that's about it.

You don't have to wait long. The only people using it now are my housemates, who bought Wii Fit. The last game I bought for it was Rune Factory Frontier, and before that No More Heroes.

MadWorld is the only thing to have cause me to dust off the Wii in quite some time. The game inside was Smash Bros, and I don't think it's been played since the week it launched.

Mine's pretty happy actually, mainly because my mates come round at uni like 3 times a week to play Smash Bros and Mario Kart. Those games plus World of Goo and Madworld are keeping me playing the console.

With Rune Factory Frontier, my dusty Wii has been dusted off and played often. I feel like caving and getting Umbrella Chronicles now that I'm using the Wii for the first time in six months. -_-

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has literally not left my Wii since the night it was released, and it gets used almost daily. As far as I'm concerned there just isn't anything worth buying/renting. Maybe this will change when The Conduit comes out?

I played No More Heroes and MadWorld, then went to better, more long-lasting action titles on the PS2. I still play Melee with my friends instead of Brawl, and I'm sick of Mario Kart; Nielsen is about right.

I would have already sold my Wii had I not bought so many virtual console games when I first got it. The last actual game I bought for it was Smash Bros Brawl, which in retrospect I didn't even like all that much.

My Wii is definitely sad and lonely. Turned it on Sunday to let my son play Wii Music. Before that...turned it on about a month ago...to let my son play Wii Music. I can't remember the last time I actually used it.

My 360 is on-par with my PS2 usage. I wake up, get ready for work, pop in a game (currently working on Dead Space), play for 15-30 minutes, leave for work.

Once the kids are in bed, and none of my shows are on, I'll play for about an hour or so. Or me and the missus will play some Rock Band.

Other then the occasional smash brothers I didn't play my Wii much since I beat No More Heroes, but since my 360 red ringed I got back into Fire Emblem and having a grand old time, and planing on going back to some Zack and Wiki which is an awesome game

I hardly ever use it. Bit Trip Beat is the last game I bought and I have been turning it on every couple of days to play that game, but it gives me a damn migraine. Before that, the last game I bought was Animal Crossing and that was more for my girlfriend. She used to be a Nintendo Apologist until Animal Crossing. After that, she was pretty mad at them because it was so similar to the DS game.

Just for comparison, however, between my girlfriend and I, I'd say our PS3 gets used for games AT LEAST a couple hours a day. Friday is my busiest weekday thanks to Dtoids FNF. If you add in the time for bluray, we use it even more.

I want to sell my wii, but the girlfriend says we will use it again some day. The more time goes by, the less I believe that.

It's obvious why the Wii gets the least average use. Since the Wii is reaching out to non-traditional consumers who don't necessarily dedicate as much time to their hobbies as the enthusiast crowd, and because the user base of the Wii is much larger than that of the 360 or the PS3, then we can assume that these new users drag down the average. I would guess that the dedicated users still play the machine way longer than the average. Consider that the average gaming session on the Wii, according to the report, is within twenty minutes of an average 360 session and within six minutes of a PS3 section. Even if you have many users only turning the machine on now and then, the average isn't so low that no one is using the thing. The enthusiast crowd, the one WE are a part of, keeps the average as high as it is.

Necrozen, I too have had thoughts of selling my Wii. But then I think that either a) I'll end up regretting it, as I did when I sold my Saturn, and b) Nintendo will come out with the most amazing game ever, like maybe a new Zelda (and not that train one...pretty sure that's for the DS anyway).

And I too am beginning to believe those two points less and less as time goes on.

I don't know. I can't find anything to play on it. My guess is that maybe people feel like me. I'd rather buy something like Killzone 2 than... what? I can't even think of a similar game on the Wii - something that I would play for hours on end on a daily basis.

No, my guess is that there are too few games that cater to gamers and those that DO exist either lack depth or were published at the beginning of the system's lifespan.

Dale, how are you playing Dokapon Journey on your Wii? That's a DS game.

I play my Wii a lot. Madworld, Bit. Trip. Beat, Lit, Super Punch Out!, Rune Factory: Frontier, Tatsunoku Vs. Capcom, Kororinpa: Marble Saga, and I've started playing Fire Emblem 10 again as well. I've also got a lot of older games that I haven't finished(or finished as much as I would like to, I finished Baroque's story mode but I want to tackle the extra dungeons at some point), as well as a bunch of GC games. The system is hardly ever off.

Maybe they're taking the average of all the people they surveyed (if so that would be shocking and statistically not useful information :O but we've seen worse in game stats reports). I know I get use out of my wii! HARVEST MOON FOR THE FREAKING WIN!

But seriously, does the amount someone spend time playing determine if a console is worthwhile? It depends on the people who play. Not news but not EVERYONE is hard core and plays games every day or multiple times a week - like my sister and brother in law. For a while they pounded on Animal Crossing and wouldn't talk to me about anything else, but lately I haven't heard a peep from them. That doesn't mean they don't value their games and the Wii though.

If you look at it from the CORPORATIONS ARE EVIL BECAUSE THEY TRY TO BE FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL angle, Nintendo wouldn't give half a turd about this report.

I know man. And the thing is, I was THE BIGGEST nintendo nerd. You know those 80 dollar wallclings that turn your room into a level from mario? That's my office. And I stuck with them longer than most, but I wasn't going to blindly let them fool me forever.

Will I still buy from them if they release a good game? Yes. I would love a new zelda that is like a true sequel to windwaker. I still believe that they can make a good game. But that makes it all the more annoying that they are releasing crap like Wii music.

I'll probably never sell it, just because of all the damn VC games I bought. But yeah, the thought still crosses my mind.

I think these stats are skewed because of the number of moms that buy the system and only have time to play it a few minutes a day. I wonder how many actual GAMERS purchase the system and don't play it? The comments seem pretty mixed on here.
I haven't played the Wii in a very, very long time. Last game I put in was Smash Brothers, and I've been too busy with other games to purchase and play Madworld.

Well, I'm kind of biased since all I buy are Nintendo systems and games. I use the Wii a lot when I'm home, WiiWare titles like Tetris Online and Bomberman are played often, as well as the 5 minutes of Megaman 9 before I get angry at its difficulty. Echoes of Time, MadWorld, Rune Factory Frontier, Dokapon Kingdom, Tales of Symphonia 2, and of course Brawl are cycled through lately. Zack and Wiki also come out every now and then in between games.

I don't know what purpose this study is supposed to prove, or how they even came up with the numbers that they did (if its survey, I'm pretty sure all the Nintendo gamers refused because Club Nintendo forces you to do a million in order to get your points, so we're kind of sick of surveys).

I claim inaccuracy on their part, and bollocks on the whole operation. People are going to use the technology they want to, and there's nothing more to it.

Necrozen, I had thought about buying those things for my kid. I have a subscription for Nintendo Power and was going to cancel it, but he loves the posters that come with it. And it's the only game magazine he can flip through without me having to make sure there aren't any pics for mature games.

Figured I'd get one of those wall-clings for him so he doesn't have al lof these posters taped to his wall...but $80 is a little expensive. I may just paint a pixelated Mario or something.

And I may hate them right now, but I have hope that they'll do something to bring us back to them. The Punch Out game is a good start, though that was announced prior to the Fatal Frame 4 news that currently has me pissed...

Yeah, those wall clings are expensive, and they are a bitch to line up, but they look awesome. I even painted the wall the "mario sky blue" before I put them up. I'm a writer so I spend a lot of time in my room pacing and getting annoyed, so seeing that childhood memory there keeps me happy.

I cancelled my Nintendo Power after years of enjoyment. I just wasn't reading them anymore.

I hope they do something good, but I feel pretty angry at them still. Are they going to come crying to me when the soccer moms hop on a new fad? I don't know if I'll be there. On the bright side, I really like Sony's approach this round.
