Your biggest gaming purchase mistakes of all-time photo

If you’re reading Destructoid, chances are you’re a huge video game nerd (or are five or six forum posts away from becoming one). You know your stuff and you’re informed of industry news daily by awesome video game sites like Destructoid. You’re also probably “cultured” (or opinionated) enough to know a good game from a steaming pile, based on anything from the publisher, a screenshot, and even the box art. As video game consumers, we’ve become empowered by the media, as well as by one another within our communities.

But this has not always been the case, and there are probably many tattered receipts with the words “DEADLY TOWERS (NES)” on them from the '80s that can attest to that.

When we old farts were growing up with video games, it was a different time. Information on video games was scarce. You wouldn't believe how many times we would walk into a local shop and be surprised to find certain new titles on the shelves that we’d never knew existed. Video game magazines were rare, so things like hype or reviews didn’t exist yet. And even when magazines started coming out of the woodwork, trusting a publication like Nintendo Power for honest reviews was a recipe for disaster and financial ruin.

So it's not surprising that the combination of youthful naiveté and lack of information would lead to some dreadful video game purchases. Not only did I want, but I whined, cried, and pulled hair for games like Jaws, Nightmare on Elm Street, and the Karate Kid (all for the NES). These games have a few things in common, of course.

One, they’re all movie licensed titles, and while we know better today, it was a different time. As a child, anything with a recognizable image on the box was “it.” It was 1989 -- who didn’t want to be Daniel LaRusso? Being trained by Mr. Miyagi, tripping up local thugs, and getting the girl sounded appealing to anyone with a beating, '80s heart. Little did I know, but the game would mostly consist of getting knocked into deadly, shallow water. Over and over again. And I would cry.

Obviously, the second thing they all have in common is that they’re all rotten, terrible games. This should have been apparent, since they were all published by LJN, a video game publisher responsible for ruining many of my childhood gaming experiences. I’m sure you all know someone who has always hated video games, saying things like they “never got into them.” Well, blame LJN. Chances are they played The Uncanny X-Men or NFL Football and never wanted to look at a controller again. Who can fault them for that?

My tastes, knowledge, and access to information on video games has matured and evolved since those days. But dreadful mistakes have been made. One that stands out in my mind is purchasing Friday the 13th for the NES (another LJN title) for an astounding $79.99 at a local video store. As a huge horror movie fan and a total Nintendo junkie, spending my and my parents' hard earned cash on pixilated Jason Voorhees goodness seemed like a great idea at the time.

Well, it was not. Let’s leave it at that, because the memories hurt. I’m going to go as far as to say it’s my biggest gaming purchase mistake of all time.

So what’s yours?

Actually, I completly forgot. I ended up buying a game packaged as "Marine Corps: Combat Evolved" or somesuch, priced at 9.99. Turns out it was a repackage of a FPS abortion known as Soldner:Secret War. Anyone who has played Soldner understands my plight - I bought this game in 2005 and it looked and played like an NES shooter. The pain... the pain.

The first red flag that should pop up for Soldner: Secret War is that they misspelled "soldier." I mean, COME ON.

I actually wanted to play Spider-Man 2 on the PC, because it was so drastically different than the console versions. It was more geared towards the kids, wasn't it?

I just bought the FFXII guide today. The verdict is still out on it, though. I haven't had the opportunity to really pore over it yet.

I also ended up buying Glover for the n64 (Have no idea what chain of events caused me to do that.)

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (Paid 50 for that)
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (Paid 50+ but was disappointed overall, it was no Kirby Superstar although the ability combinations was cool, just too cutesy)

I do in fact own Friday the 13th for the NES but I have absolutely no recollection as to how it came into my possession.

I know a guy who almost paid 70 bucks for Superman 64. Luckily for him he had forgotten his credit card when he went out to buy it.

A few of my Atari 2600 games I regret buying. I bought them all within 5-7 years of right now, so I didn't pay much for them, but most of them aren't really worth playing. I have many of the greats of the 2600, so the system gets some use time to time. And one of my friends enjoys the system, so we play it when he's here.

(or whatever its called) some really bad racing game i got in 1996... it was horrible! it featured 3 cars and about 10 tracks, the tracks which featured the same repeating crappy model over and over again... and oh the wonderful particle effects... large brown pixels all over the screen when you're on dirt! large white pixels when on snow! :D i love that game.... clay fighter judgement clay for the snes.. but thats about it.. iv been pretty lucky with my purchases as a youth.. especially sicne i didnt know what I was buying. I bought tons of games without knowing what to expect and for some reason I always walked out of the store with a really awesome game. It was just luck i Guess. When I was 8 I requested mega man X. without really knowing what it was or that it would spark a 5 year love affar with megaman all through out the snes's lifespan and I have tons of games I have bought and loved under the same circumstances

I don't know...I had some crappy games on NES and Genesis, but being a kid at the time I still enjoyed playing them oblivious to the suckitude (see: Primal Rage and the Bible Boulderdash rip-off with Moses, somehow I enjoyed these)

In recent years I've made it a point to not buy anything crappy. I can't think of anything.

I can't believe there was a day when NES games costed 80 bucks.

I don't get worked up about my mistakes, as discovering great games requires you to search, and searching pretty much necessitates failure at least once in a while. And I don't think I mess up often, as I get free rentals and play pretty much every game I buy before hand.

My biggest "failure" would be all the games I've wasted time on by ranting mistakenly put together. Add all that up and it's a big loss, especially back before two years ago when I had to pay for rentals.

Sonic Heroes: Since I never played a Sonic game except for sonic 1 for the genesis I thought it would be cool. Now I think the only way to even try to redeem myself of a horrible purchase is to sell on ebay with with my cube since I got a Wii now.

Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi for the PS1: I bought it because as a kid I liked it when my folks rented it for me. Fast Forward about 5 years and I realize it is the worst Star Wars game ever made.

Not exactly old but my biggest regret was buying the original "Rugby" sports game for the PS2.. It seemed like a great idea... Until I realized I knew nothing about the sport, the manual didn't tell me jack about the rules or really how to play the videogame and I spent the day in 'scrummage' after 'scrummage' and kicking the ball around.. It sucked so bad I returned it later that night for a discount.. What a terrible, terrible game.

Phantasy Star Universe. I bought two copies so I could play with a friend in another state. My god, what a waste of $100. Despite the fact that they added a whole slew of things I wished were in PSO, SEGA forgot all the, you know, fun.

The gamegear. I was about six going on seven and after begging for ages I got one. Little did I know that it was capable of munching through 4 AA batteries in about 30 minutes or something stupid. Also, some Power Rangers fighter game on the Megadrive.

Although I have no recollection of buying it, I just found a Gameboy game in my cupboard called Sneaky Snakes and it is completely and utterly shit, so if I paid full price for that it's a clear winner.
