Young EGM reader can't cancel new Maxim subscription photo

What is it about having a child that turns so many women into compulsive complaint-filers overnight? Whenever something happens on TV, on the radio, or in videogames, you can guarantee that a gaggle of concerned moms will be stood front and center of the opposition. This is one we should have seen coming a mile away, as the Maxim mags intended to replace EGM have found their way into childish hands.

A twelve-year-old Boston boy received a copy of Maxim instead of the defunct EGM, something which upset mother Kathleen O' Donnell. Even worse, her son Jake has already received two copies of the magazine, despite her attempts to cancel the flow of discreetly-covered boobs and hilarious jokes about beer.

"When I saw it, I didn't think it was a magazine my son should be looking at," she said.

While the Maxim subscription was undoubtedly seen as a good trade by many gamers, it was surprising that those in charge didn't think this through, and at least offer a more innocent choice of mag for the youngsters. Surely a great many subscribers were children, and I'm certain they're learning all sorts of cool new things from this strange magazine that suddenly replaced their videogame one.

A) Yeah I think EGM or whoever orchestrated this should have used better judgement. I mean this doesn't help the whole argument that video game magazines aren't the dealers of sex and violence to the underaged.

B) Why the hell would you rag on the lady? Her concern is valid (my values would disagree but I can see why she's upset) and she's not starting any riots or picketing outside anyone's door. She's exploiting a dumbass move on the mag's part and maybe now the orchestraters will offer an option and other parents may be a little more cautious with what their kids get in the mail.

i don't know why people wig out over maxim so much. it's way way way tamer than most women's mags like cosmo.

i once got a free sub as part of an order from a website.. for some reason, it didn't occur to me that they would send the mag to my shipping address(doh!) and it came to my office. i didn't think it was such a big deal but the girls who bring the mail around kept cracking jokes about it as if it was hustler or something. oh well. f-em.

QFT Smoger. Seriously, I used to work at an office where we had a large pile of various magazines from newsweek to Cosmo. and lemme tell ya. 99% of Cosmo is either scantily clad models, or advice on "how to give your man the ultimate orgasm via this newfangled and extremely complicated sexual position"

Yeah, who's idea was this? Because they really should have considered that small children play games too. Though, yeah, the internet is better than any gaming mag. Or porn mag. Or gaming porn mag!

Is it not wrong as far as YOU'RE NOT GETTING THE MAGAZINE YOU'VE PAID FOR? Fuck the whole kids with scantily clad women pictures argument, kids getting ripped off is more important.

I mean if I went to Game and pre-ordered Assasin's Creed 2 then on release day recieved Motorstorm in the post instead, I would be fucking pissed! I would want my money back!

Surely this magazine company, being unable to supply what subscribers have paid for should just refund their money?!?! Or is the USA so business-centric that it has no consumer rights???

I commented on this in one of Jim's stories yesterday.

The decision maker(s) who decided that giving exEGM subscribers a Maxim subscription to make up for the rest of the subscription are idiots who should be fired.

I'm sure that this will piss people off, but it's the truth:

ANYONE who thinks that this is not a big deal (i.e. replacing Maxim for EGM) is either not a parent or a bad parent.

Yes...I obviously know that a 12-13 year old boy has seen far worse than Maxim. I know what I had seen at watched at that age. However, as a parent, I would be absolutely livid if my 12-13 year old boy started to receive Maxim issues from an EGM cancellation. Just because my boy at 12 will probably have seen much worse than Maxim doesn't mean that I need some idiot screwballs sending my son that kind of crap at that age.

I didn't react to it because it was my subscription; I'm 28 so not a big deal. But if that subscription was my 12-year-old son, I would have gone off the handle at that company.

My girlfriend had a subscription to EGM and she was pretty pissed that they changed it to Maxim. She doesn't really hate Maxim for what it is, but was frustrated that once again, the blanket assumption was made that all gamers are male. Of course statistically I'm sure the vast majority of subscribers were male, but it's another case of the small minorities just being completely ignored.

I think it is OK. If the kid was younger, I would agree with the mother. But he's 12, he's probably getting interested on such things by himself (Maxim home delivery or not). About being forced to receive Maxim, I think the family should have been given options: receive the money back, or freely choose the replacement magazine.

I subscribed to EGM and got one issue in before they went ka-pootz. I called to get a refund and they said it was on the way? What do I get instead? Wired. I now have a subscription to Wired that I don't read.

You can't even begin to think about fapping to Wired, so I'm jealous. God damnit.

I don't care that I got Maxim, because I cancelled it.

What I am pissed about is that their refund check BOUNCED. That's right folks, I can't get my money back. I've tried calling the customer service number three times and have not had anyone pick up.

I doubt that I'm going to begin the long fight with the BBB or other outlets to try and get my $13.65 back, but I'd rather get a crappy magazine that may have a nice picture or two than have nothing.

Want to trade subscriptions Dimly? I would get more use out of Wired then I do Maxim. Seriously, you don't get Maxim for the articles. There's barely anything good to read in there to begin with. Why go for softcore semi-porn when you can get the real thing for free off the internet? I opted to get my money back but the bastards still haven't given me anything.

I wonder how many kids who get home in time to bring the mail in themselves never bothered to tell their parents about the switch. I'm guessing quite a few.

I agree with sexualchocolate... the offer should have been a cancellation and refund or a choice of magazines instead.

It's not just moms of 12 year olds... I'm an older female and like gaming magazines... having MAXIM arrive at my door instead of EGM is not anything I would be interested in. (now if they had a "for the ladies" version of the magazine... maybe...) :)

I've bee getting Maxims instead of EGM, and I have to say I'd rather have EGM. Maxim is like 90% ads, 5% pictures, and 5% random articles I don't really feel like reading. I need to find that refund thing...

I don't see why they had a major problem with it.. All I did was nicely send in a letter saying that I didn't want that magazine and would rather have a refund for the amount of the rest of my subscription. They sent me a check and it was easy as pie. =/

@Sam Spectre: LMFAO the same thing happened to me and my mom said "Sam what the hell, aren't you gay?" <---LOL! Your poor mom and the false hope that maybe, just maybe...you weren't! lawl

On topic; I received my first Maxim-EGM-replacement a while back and I was all "o_O WTF is this?" Nothing against tits or anything, but I can get better, for free, online.

I have a tendency to get magazines canceled when I subscribe to them it seems: I subbed to FHM(awesome mag, was better than Maxim, for sure) and you wanna know what I got when it went under? SWEATY GUYS MAGAZINE(actually, it was some sports mag which seemed to feature a fucking shirtless guy on the cover each month). I know Spectre would've enjoyed it, but the average subscriber to FHM!? WHAT THE HELL!? Companies really don't know shit when it comes to fulfilling magazine orders.

The reason why no one ever offers a refund? Moneys. Where was Ziff Davis going to get all the money to send everyone refunds when they just went belly up on EGM? Secondly, more moneys. Why pay the rest of your $19.99 subscription when they can just send you another magazine that doesn't cost them anything?

Also, lol spectre's gay.

sorry XD

I have a Maxim in my bathroom and I bought it because Avril Lavigne was on the cover. I think I've only bought 4 Maxims in total in my lifetime and about 40 PSM magazines....gawd I loved them.

Other than that I read Archie while doin mah business and I have like 200 bookets from my grandma, she buys them like candy.

Yea, I can see why filling the rest of the subscription with Maxim would be a funny joke, but doing it for real was pretty dumb. It definitely assumes that all gamers are 18 to 30 year old straight guys. Offering a list of magazines that you could replace EGM with would have been the best choice.

Also, I agree with the mother on this one. If your son is into video games then EGM would be fun for him to have. But replacing it with a more mature magazine without her knowing is a problem. At least she isn't making a massive scandal out of it and trying to ban all video games forever as far as I can tell.

@mix I effin love archie comics for toilet reading.

i agree with everyone saying that the mother has every right to be upset. i don't know how kid friendly egm is, but it's most certainly more appropriate for 12 year old boys than maxim is. the distributors definitely should have offered a choice of refund or a different replacement.

Whatever, Maxim US is pretty darn tame.

@PeowwTiq I took it more as an attack on the general "Won't someone please think of the children?!" line of complaint/protest/outrage which I find horrendously annoying.

as far as fapping material goes it's pretty damn mediocre (though I probably would have jizzed in my pants if I was 12), but I kept the subscription because they do have a few interesting articles and I'll take as much toilet reading as I can get
