You won't see a Mario game on Facebook anytime soon photo

Social gaming, and Facebook in particular, were hot topics at Game Developers Conference last week. As Ashley Davis said after attending a social gaming presentation, there were a lot of people getting involved in Facebook gaming that you wouldn't expect to see in that arena.

Given Nintendo's own admittance that they make "great content for more casual players", you'd think that they WOULD be a company considering expanding to Facebook. In an interview with Industry Gamers, Reggie does, in fact, admit that he's intrigued by the social gaming space, and that he finds micro-transactions to be 'very interesting', but he says Nintendo has no interest in putting their franchises on Facebook. The problem Nintendo has with putting games on Facebook is that Nintendo doesn't own Facebook.

It's an interesting problem for a first party developer -- Nintendo would almost assuredly do extremely well on Facebook, but as the maker of both a console and a handheld device, they also have to give people incentives to buy their hardware. If people can access their games on another 'platform', they might not bother to buy the next Wii or DS.

What do you think? Would it be more profitable overall for Nintendo to expand out to Facebook, or are they doing the right thing (businesswise, at least) by sticking with their own hardware. What about the concept of Facebook as a gaming platform? I have to admit I'd never thought of it that way before, but given how popular casual gaming has become there, I may have to rethink my definition of platform.

I think it would be great to have a pokewalker like app on Facebook little things like that. With a store that uses real money would make extra cash on the side for Nintendo.

Facebook gaming is useless. If i have a PC to go to check Facebook, I can play games with it. At least at the level Facebook delivers. And then there are a thousands of Flash games and MMO browser games.
But for people who think the Internet is a joint venture of Google/Myspace/Twitter/Facebook and Youtube...

they could make a supplemental game that encourages players to buy the full wii or dsi version if they really wanted. like a mario game that only has 2 levels, just like a demo but nintendo doing it and on facebook.

You are a journalist (supposedly). You should be well informed about the industry.

How much money has farmville, widely considered to be the most successful facebook game, made?

How much has New Super Mario Bros. Wii made?

Even if they weren't canabalizing their hardware sales with facebook games, I fail to see any profit margin that would motivate nintendo to put its best franchise on facebook. Not when relatively speaking, there is so much more money in making games console releases, and especially not when they are trying to sell so much hardware with their software. Wii Fit and the balance board, Wii Play with the Wiimote, Sports Resort with the motion plus, even Mario Kart wii do not work on facebook.

They should put a couple of Mario games up there and attach ridiculously high prices to them. That way, hardly anyone will play them, and therefore hardly anyone will be discouraged from buying Nintendo hardware by their access to the games. And Nintendo will make a nice profit from the handful of people who do pay for the service.

Right?

It's not the avenue they want to explore. They'd rather charge you $5 for SMB1 for as many different storefront-enabled devices as they can get away with.

And NO, previous purchases can't transfer, you silly human.

I don't see Nintendo as the sort who would do much on social networks anyway. Japanese companies don't have much of a hold on that as Western companies do, do they? The average Facebook gamer (and I use that term lightly) probably isn't very interested in long-staying mascots like Mario. Just look at the current offerings. Most of them don't have a single hero with a name or even a constant, distinct appearance. Your avatars on Facebook games are somewhat customizable in terms of color, but they don't do much more than a Mii in most cases.

I mean, they make plenty already on their own systems. Why would they want to expand into another lucrative market when they already own two?

Japan doesn't really bother with a lot of Social Networking, so I don't see Nintendo wanting to step up to the plate.

Contrary to what you'd expect, Peach actually does have Bowser friended on Facebook. All he does is post tons of pictures of his cat, so she hides his updates.

This is why I utterly despise the term "casual games." Games/ apps on Facebook and the like are entirely different beast from any "casual" game you'd see on a console.

They just fill a different niche. You would NEVER play them any other time you specifically sat down to play a game, they're there to (at best) amuse you and make work and/or your daily web browsing routine less boring. They work because they're addictive but do not interfere with anything else you're doing or supposed to be doing at that moment. This is not exactly where you'd want Mario & Co. to be.

Directly publishing their DS games on facebook? nah, the "If people can access their games on another 'platform', they might not bother to buy the next DS." is pretty sound, that said, Qraze seems to have a damn good idea how to work around the problem.

Wow, she's young. I guess that means Bowser Jr isn't the illegitimate son of Peach. That'd make her about 10 or younger when he was born. Oh well, she's still a tease.

Oddly enough I think Nintendo would be the only successful transition between a mainstream game and a social game. I don't think anyone is particularly interested in Modern Warfare on facebook, but Mario on facebook would be the shit.

That said. I think it'd be fine. I don't think there is any indication that social games are decreasing the sales on mainstream games. People don't go to facebook to play games... they go to facebook to facebook, and while they are there they are looking for things to do. I don't think anyone is going to go "Man, fuck Mario Galaxy. I'm gonna play facebook Mario!" Facebook numbers aren't gamer numbers, they are FACEBOOK numbers. People on facebook, doing facebook things. In terms of market demographics, I'd consider the two to be wholly separate with little to no relevant bleedover.

Just this past week, the Game Developers Conference was held in downtown San Francisco, CA. If you're unfamiliar with GDC, it is the "world's largest professionals-only game industry event." In other words, everyday gaming enthusiast can't just walk in Personalised Sweets off the street to take a look around. GDC is held every spring and is basically a forum for learning and networking for the creators of computer, console, handheld, mobile, and online games. Hundreds of companies come out to present their latest wares, preview upcoming titles, and also interview thousands of potential game developers. Intel used GDC 2010 to announce their latest processor, the Core i7 980X Extreme Edition. Codnamed "Gulftown", it is the first 32nm, six core processor that that can process up to 12 threads through the use of HyperThreading technology. At Intel's booth, we saw several systems that were running applications enhanced for this new platform, including Sega's Napoleon Total War and Ubisoft's RUSE. We even had a chance to attend a dinner event thrown by Intel to demo the Extreme Edition processor in action, installed in Alienware's ALX system.
