Charge me honestly upfront, don't design a game to be a gradual money wringer, or worse a pay-to-be-competitive clusterfuck. FTP dictates game design choices that emphasize you opening your wallet over you having fun.
Also I like that you already know their complete business model despite them not announcing anything.
If you can't think how this will effect player/game interaction though yourself, I won't waste my time explaining it.
@Jibberwocky You mean by selling the game like normal for years to hundreds of thousands of people, and then making it FTP when it is 4 years old and had already had a successful retail run? That works ;)
If you want to bring Farmville monetization to real games, keep uncritically embracing FTP games.
If you're curious, this article went around last year and underlines alot of the problems

If you're obsessed with things like leaderboard and k/d rankings, then yes, I can see this being a(personal)issue. However, if you're just looking for some occasional fun, what's the problem with not having "the best" gear? For all we know, the paid content could be purely cosmetic.
Save judgment for when we actually know something about it.
Back then there was talk of it going to consoles but I guess they ditched that idea and went for FTP. Damn shame really... this was the most promising game at E3 and I would have gladly payed 60 for it even without a silly single player mode shoehorned in.
EFF YES HAWKEN
And as someone else mentioned, the business model necessarily alters the game's design, which I really don't like. Never mind how you are supposed to keep any sense of balance when people can simply buy superior equipment and such.
