You're cheap: 'Still Alive' free on Rock Band Unplugged photo

The Rock Band Unplugged music store on the PlayStation Portable is updating today, bringing the total available tracks for download up to 19. While that pales into comparison to the 700-plus songs available on the consoles, it’s a start.

Like any good dealer, Harmonix and MTV Games are giving you a hit for free today -- Jonathan Coulton’s “Still Alive” is available for download, completely for free. After you get a taste of this fancy new download technology, maybe you’ll want more, and will be willing to spend $1.99 a piece on these tracks:

  • Dixie Chicks -- “Sin Wagon”
  • The Pixes -- “Here Comes Your Man”
  • R.E.M. -- “Losing My Religion”
  • Stevie Ray Vaughan -- “Pride and Joy”

I know a few people have been hesitant to grab the DLC for their portable rocking, and that’s totally understandable, especially if they’ve already blew their cash on those same songs to play on their consoles. But you have to understand that how the songs are tracked are completely different; they can’t just give you two for one, folks.

With that said, maybe if MTV and Harmonix could put up with some bitching and whining, releasing songs new to the series on the PSP first might encourage some people to spend some cash. They could start with all of the tracks from Radiohead’s The Bends, for instance. Okay, I kind of just want those songs in the Rock Band store, but you get where I’m going with this.

Would you be more willing to spend money on Rock Band Unplugged songs if they were exclusive (for a limited time, of course) to the game?

Yeah, seeing how Radiohead is probably the last band to put their music up (unless they have already, then consider my hat eaten). They don't even allow their music to be used for commercials! Though I did hear Everything In Its Right Place on CSI once...hrmm.

How about adding "Still Alive"...from Mirror's Edge?

I don't think anything they could do (aside from giving them out for free like "Still Alive") could make me download them on the PSP. It's not that it's not worth it, it's just that I already give MTV/Harmonix/EA so much money on the console versions, I can't justify buying songs for the PSP too.

you better grab a glass of water and ready that hat, Doomsday;
i know for sure that Radiohead's "Creep" is playable on Rock Band -- dunno what else is available.

Who doesn't want The Bends on Rock Band? Or most of Radiohead's music that would be suitable for the game.

@bodybreak:

"Iron Lung" is downloadable as well, which means there's no reason why God damn it the rest of the God damn album isn't available God damn it. GOD, HARMONIX/MTV.

Where the hell is it? It's not on the PSP store...all the other songs are there. Damn you for getting me all excited. :(

You know, if Harmonix just titled this "Amplitude 2" or anything other than "Rock Band Unplugged" people would have no problem buying these.

Personally, I have a simple guideline. On the console version I buy songs I enjoy and that are fun.

On the PSP I will buy songs that challenge me like crazy. I didn't find much of a challenge in the built in tracks however Constant Motion is kicking my ass at the ~45% mark every time.

I think people just aren't realizing these are two completely different games. My first PS2 game was Frequency and the game got me into the genre of music games. I'll throw a ton of money at Rock Band Unplugged for that reason.

So, I'm still debating about Rock Band Unplugged. I need to get a PSP, but I don't know if I should get the Unplugged bundle. Still Alive is a pretty fuckin awesome song though. . .

I'm holding off from buying any songs just a bit longer, since the manual states something about track packs, and I don't want to see a discounted bundle for some tracks pop up the day after I buy some. But if they don't get them out, I'll just cave and get the tracks.

I don't know . . . . I don't think Glados' voice is as processed as Katy's.
