You get what you pay for: PSTriples darn near indestructible? photo

With all of the negativity surrounding the quality of Microsoft's Xbox 360 hardware, it's almost a welcome sight to see a headline proclaiming the durability of the PlayStation 3 (however partial the source may be).

According to recent tests conducted by PS3Vault, nothing short of a sledgehammer is powerful enough to bring the mighty PS3 to its knees. So what sort of hardships did the PSTriple endure and pass with flying colors? How about 108 hours of pretty much nonstop use in the harshest of environments:

  • A typical family room with a brutal temperature of 73 F
  • Four days in the back of a freezer van at 0 F
  • In a sauna with a cool 120 F air temperature

Guess what? The PS3 didn't buckle under the pressure -- even when faced with the unfathomable idea of playing  a marathon of the "Blu-rays." Pretty impressive, when you consider the thousands of Xbox 360s that have perished in the most comfortable of places. However, I must point out that while this looks good to Sony fans out there, I'm less than inclined to believe it without some video to back it up.

Hit the jump for the full details on the testing.

The following conditions were applied to each testing environment

• Continuous usuage of 108hours with no interruption to power supply
• Game of choice was Resistance Fall of Man & Motor Storm, Enchanted Arms
• Blu Ray movies – Several – around 10 different titles , Casino Royale, The Departed, Pirates of the Caribbean, Terminator 2, Superman Returns…
• Console was positioned on standalone timber unit with approximate 10cms of airflow under neath.
• Same 10 players were used over this period each playing or using the unit for a maximum of 1.5hours in any given session.
• Same controllers were used throughout the testing period

The following cycle was copied and used in each testing environment.
Start time Monday 9am –
2 hours blue ray dvd titles
4 hours continuous play on Resistance FOM
2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm
2 x blue ray dvd movies
1 x blue ray dvd movie
1 x blue ray dvd movie
2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm
6 hours of Motor Storm
6 hours of Resistance Fom
10 hours of Blue Ray Dvd 7 titles
1 hour of Motor Storm
3 hours of Resistance
5 hours of Enchanted Arms
2 hours blue ray dvd title
2 hours blue ray dvd title
5 hours Resistance FOM
5 hours Motor Storm
1 hour enchanted Arms
3 hours blue ray dvd titles
Repeated from the top until 108hours

Environment 1 Typical Family Room
Temperature 73 F
Console Ran continuous for the 108hours with only once incident happening at 12 hours in – a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds. For the remaining time allocated no incidents were reported

Environment 2 Back of a Freezer Van – unit was placed inside the closed van with controllers and screen mounted outside, - no one was willing to sit in side the van for any extended period of time
Temperature Started at 50F and was progressively scaled down over the next 4 days to reach 0degrees.
Incidents We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees , this was maintained for the last 24hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden , blackout to the screen, this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen.
108hours in and still working fine

Environment 3 Heat Sauna – again console inside and controllers and screen outside.
Starting temperature was 100F and Gradually increased to 120F over the last 24hours.
Incidents Strangley enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.
This console is now back in a normal environment and working fine.

@Lowtax:
"I find it hilarious that someone will cry about this price but will spend twice to three times that on a PC."

That's because the people complaining don't really have a problem with the price. They have a problem with the PS3 or Sony and if it wasn't price they'd come up with some other thing to bitch about. Take Dvddesign's posts for example, he seems to think the PS3 still costs $600.

Oh, for the love of God. Stop fellating Sony and chill out. I was bitching at his analogy. The PS3 is not a computer - regardless of what's under its hood - it's a console. A console should not cost $600. This is where Sony is fucking up: they're trying to give people a cutting edge...

Oh, screw it. I'm not going to throw this argument against a brick wall for the thousandth time. A console is not a PC and it never will be - nor should it be.

i can install linux on it, and run it like a pc. sure limited memory. but yes, i can burn dvds with it, code, graphics edit limited, but yes. i can use it as a computer..

@hexfix93 - Yes, you CAN put linux on a PS3... Guess what? You can also run Linux on a PS2... Does that mean the PS2 for $100 is better than a $600 PC? NO...

Even on the PS3 it doesn't run that well and your sure as hell not going to get any powerful programs running.
The Nvidia graphics card is not supported beyond framebuffer (direct kernal rendering, mainly for kernal text) mode, this means it doesn't support accelerated video nor OpenGL support. So basically you can turn your Linux PS3 into a Linux machine with a crap graphics card. Have fun graphic editing in GIMP...

Anyway, I'll just wait 2 years for all those games everyone listed to finally come out then buy my PS3 at a reasonable price (less than $300). Then I'm the winner cause I get to play all those games you "early-adopters" got to sit and wait for... yay me!

It's not like the PS3 is gonna die... It's just never going to live up to the legacy of the PS2.

I've never really doubted the hardware capabilities of the PS3, nor necessarily the build quality, but it was everyone's hate machine because of Ken Kutaragi, it's price, and the lack of games.

When they bring in great games(which seems like it's happening), reduce the price even more, and perhaps get rumble back, I'm game for PS3. Until then, I'll enjoy my second 360 (courtesy of relatively painless customer support at Microsoft)

yeah, the ps3 is a computer though, is it a good one? NO. but it is one none the less. so if you spend 600 on one, you get a blueray dvd player, hdmi output, big hd, cool ps3 games, web browser, the playstation store, all the cool stuff like home, and amazing epic games that the 360 doesnt have, wifi out of the box, free internet.

and to get all that minus a web browser and epic games, you spend more on the xbox 360.

You know... now that I'm thinking about it.. the PS2 was out for about five or six years before I had any interest in it at all. I still dont have one but I might pick one up now that they are practically free. And maybe in another five or six years when there is a clear winner in this round's console battle, I'll buy that one.

The thing here is that Sony is a on a ten year plan and based on the longevity of the PS2, I think that just might be possible. Did they intend to get seven or eight years of the last one? Because it happened.

This could go one of two ways:
way the first... not enough people buy the PS3 because of the price/games/other, Sony revises their strategy and releases a new console at the same time as Microsoft's next release. Nintendo does something no one expects, Sony loses.

way the second... enough people buy the PS3 for them to stick to the plan. In 2011 or 2012 Microsoft releases the Xbox 720 and everyone says "well, I already own a PS3 which is remarkably still current gen, why would I spend more money on a new console when this is still good for five more years". Nintendo does something no one expects, Microsoft loses.

And, thankfully for us gamers, no matter what happens it will all come down to the games. Actually... I could say a lot more, is there a character limit? I don't want my argument to be incomplete and over simplified.

<scratches head>

Wow, a person says the PS3 is is like a computer, which it is in some senses (albeit not a top-of-the-line one), and everyone blows up? Really?

Wow, just watching all that makes almost everyone look like LOSE. But then again, we are human, aren't we. Still funny as shit to see some peeps get fired up over a simple fact some mentioned. To play Devil's Advocate for a sec, if Sony didn't mention that they were trying, ON PURPOSE (thus not a fuck up like some poeple mention), that they were making a machine that does a whole lot more than play games and will generally take over the living room, I would of been bitching right along with Sharpless. Not hate on him at all...

...just sayin...

Obviously Microsoft's hardware issues are bad enough that no one can call it a minor setback anymore. This might persuade people into buying Sony this round, or if they really had their hearts set on the 360, they might just sit back and wait for those problems to go away.

I'm almost not sure if any of us should be talking about Nintendo in this debate because they're obviously not in such direct competition. The wii is more of a console spin-off. This isn't necessarily good or bad, but for now, for this round, we should leave them out of the discussion. And when those real games (ie Metroid) come out and when you say "they are a true competitor"... we'll see how well you like holding your arm up to shoot things all day. It doesn't sound very relaxing to me.

Anyway now I'm off topic, what was I talking about?

Oh yeah, the games. I bet a lot of great games get missed because of bad marketing on consoles that never made it. Maybe we should all just be thankful that we have three big companies vying for our attention who are all making at least some good games and presenting us with CHOICE. It doesn't matter which is better as long as we each choose to have fun once we stop bitching on the internet. [/rant]

DonkeyKong, I shall worship your avatar and wise words for a whole 5 seconds... for they are nearly the spitting image of what I've been saying since this console war started.

Yes, again if I had to pick one, I'd been a Sony man for I've had great experinces with them the most, but the choice to pick anyone you want should be the main focus of all this they suck, I win crap all over the interwebs.

@Donkeykong : I've played RE4 for hours upon hours... It's called resting your arm on something, it's not like you have to hold you arm up in the air, you can easily use your wrist to aim... Have you even played a Wii? Cause it helps before commenting on a very unique control style.

Do you hold your arms strait when you hold a dual-analog controller, or do you rest your elbows on something?

The Wii has sold 10m already, it's the fastest selling console in history so far and it's about to overtake the 360... you can start counting it now.

In threads like these, have you ever noticed how it's usually only the Sony fanboys who complain when someone makes a "fanboys are retarded" comment? Hitting a bit too close to home, perhaps?

@hexfix93

The picture wasn't meant to be funny. It was meant to be descriptive and truthful and indicative of an acute annoyance with the subject matter, which it is. This whole damn Console War is also over done and really not all that funny, as well, but you don't see that stopping anyone from keeping it alive ad absurdum, do you?

to all those dipshits that diss the fan(boy or girl) action on blogs across the internet:

1. Your life would be boring as fuck with out it.
2. You would have no other reason to feel superior to anyone else except paraplegics and tards (and canadians depending on where you live)
3. Blogs would not exist
4. The XBox 360 would not exist
5. You would really having nothing passionate or substantial to bring to the table otherwise

done.

@Sharpless I own a 2k tower and I don't remember calling anyone a tool? :l Please post where I said PC users were tools for investing money into their rig. Chill out man, my comparison was this: The PS3 is a quality entertainment system. I would gladly pay my 500(600 after tax) for the 60gig which I'll pick up before it's phased out but the fact is, when PC set the way for what's next in gaming, what the hell else can consoles do?

When Half-Life 2 came out what was it's big focus? Graphics and a physics engine. Whatever I'm not going to explain myself to someone who spends time trying to downsize some dude on a comment post, grow a pair.

@hexix I know right? :[ Makes me sad in the pants.

I have played the wii but not any FPS games for it. Not everyone has a couch with a high arm rests, what else do you recommend resting your arm on? And when I use dual analog, no, I don't rest my elbows on anything. My arms hang totally relaxed. I don't doubt the wiimote's accuracy or ... or anything at all like that. I suppose I might be able to get used to aiming without lining up any sights though, using the same relaxed arm position I've grown accustomed to over the years. We'll see, someday.

As for counting it... I never tried to discredit the wii as an electronic device or to take away from its success, and if you read my post you should have seen that. I was just making the point that it's not in direct competition anymore. It's taking a new approach to this thing we call gaming.

Okay, I'm not going to reply to individuals, but I do want to apologize for going into sarcasm overload on Lowtax. I was pissed off at something else, and damn if it didn't feel good to be sarcastic. Nothing personal, I just felt your analogy was way off. Now, just as a generic response, here's where I stand on the three consoles:

Xbox 360: It has the best software and the best online service, and that's what matters to me, so I prefer this system. Its hardware troubles are absolutely atrocious and disgusting, but I feel the pros outweight the cons, here. I will be purchasing one. Outside of the realm of games, I do not like Microsoft products.

PS3: It's a powerful system and it does well in the hardware department, but the online service and the software have a long way to go, to say the least. Until they start to catch up there, and the price enters $399 territory, I have no desire to consider purchasing one.

Wii: It's a fun-looking system and the VC is a phenomenal thing, but I am not a fan of motion control and I don't think I ever will be. I would, however, be interested in purchasing this, largely because it's so cheap. It's a novelty console, but I don't dislike it.

So, no hard feelings towards anyone or any company. I am not a fanboy. :)

Neither am i, i'm not a sony fan boy. i just think it appeals to me the most out of all the systems, in the end it's nothing more than a taste thing. peace to all for their tastes and systems. once microsoft fixes their 360, i will stop throwing online bombs at them. i tip my hat to them for their 3 years of warrenty. but still, they should pay something for the wait time. they should throw in a free game or something.

if the new 360s don't red ring, i will buy one. and own both the ps3 and 360 happily..

i thought the 360 launch sucked. and i am still not that impressed with the 360 games yet. but i know good games are coming to the 360 still. but the ps3 is getting neat games too. both systems are great. but the 360 had a head start, and still didn't make me want one even after a year. so that being said, this falls ps3 titles sold me. as to where the 360s still haven't. maybe mass effect will change that. i dunno.

to me, if i was going to have to buy an hd tv to play these new systems, i wanted an hd dvd player included in my 500 dollar console, the 360 did not offer that to me. the ps3 did. and in the end, that with the ps3 fall games are what sold me more on it. it was a taste thing. i just get so sick of people bad mouthing the ps3 and saying the 360 is so great, when it is the 360 that has tons of issues, and the only problem with the ps3 is that the software is still in its 1st gen.

Good to know. A lemon hardware is pretty much a death sentence as far as I'm concerned no matter how great the games library is. It's what kept me away from the PS2 no matter how many revisions they did. This however is only the first wall to break through. The next one is price though that's easy enough to wait out. I'm patient.

Come on Gameboi, it is "Blu-ray" or "Blu-ray Disc" not "blue ray dvd." They have zero association with the DVD Forum.

Other than that, good to see just how well built the PS3 is. I've had it running nonstop Folding with no lockups.
