You get what you pay for: PSTriples darn near indestructible? photo

With all of the negativity surrounding the quality of Microsoft's Xbox 360 hardware, it's almost a welcome sight to see a headline proclaiming the durability of the PlayStation 3 (however partial the source may be).

According to recent tests conducted by PS3Vault, nothing short of a sledgehammer is powerful enough to bring the mighty PS3 to its knees. So what sort of hardships did the PSTriple endure and pass with flying colors? How about 108 hours of pretty much nonstop use in the harshest of environments:

  • A typical family room with a brutal temperature of 73 F
  • Four days in the back of a freezer van at 0 F
  • In a sauna with a cool 120 F air temperature

Guess what? The PS3 didn't buckle under the pressure -- even when faced with the unfathomable idea of playing  a marathon of the "Blu-rays." Pretty impressive, when you consider the thousands of Xbox 360s that have perished in the most comfortable of places. However, I must point out that while this looks good to Sony fans out there, I'm less than inclined to believe it without some video to back it up.

Hit the jump for the full details on the testing.

The following conditions were applied to each testing environment

• Continuous usuage of 108hours with no interruption to power supply
• Game of choice was Resistance Fall of Man & Motor Storm, Enchanted Arms
• Blu Ray movies – Several – around 10 different titles , Casino Royale, The Departed, Pirates of the Caribbean, Terminator 2, Superman Returns…
• Console was positioned on standalone timber unit with approximate 10cms of airflow under neath.
• Same 10 players were used over this period each playing or using the unit for a maximum of 1.5hours in any given session.
• Same controllers were used throughout the testing period

The following cycle was copied and used in each testing environment.
Start time Monday 9am –
2 hours blue ray dvd titles
4 hours continuous play on Resistance FOM
2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm
2 x blue ray dvd movies
1 x blue ray dvd movie
1 x blue ray dvd movie
2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm
6 hours of Motor Storm
6 hours of Resistance Fom
10 hours of Blue Ray Dvd 7 titles
1 hour of Motor Storm
3 hours of Resistance
5 hours of Enchanted Arms
2 hours blue ray dvd title
2 hours blue ray dvd title
5 hours Resistance FOM
5 hours Motor Storm
1 hour enchanted Arms
3 hours blue ray dvd titles
Repeated from the top until 108hours

Environment 1 Typical Family Room
Temperature 73 F
Console Ran continuous for the 108hours with only once incident happening at 12 hours in – a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds. For the remaining time allocated no incidents were reported

Environment 2 Back of a Freezer Van – unit was placed inside the closed van with controllers and screen mounted outside, - no one was willing to sit in side the van for any extended period of time
Temperature Started at 50F and was progressively scaled down over the next 4 days to reach 0degrees.
Incidents We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees , this was maintained for the last 24hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden , blackout to the screen, this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen.
108hours in and still working fine

Environment 3 Heat Sauna – again console inside and controllers and screen outside.
Starting temperature was 100F and Gradually increased to 120F over the last 24hours.
Incidents Strangley enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.
This console is now back in a normal environment and working fine.

Alright! Finally a major developer catered to my dire need to play Resistance while sitting in a freezer truck. Now if ONLY I had another game to play on the PS3 in said refrigerator mobile...

I don't know.. Both of my 360s died on me, and I treated them like a newborn baby. If it wasn't for all the games I've invested in, I'd be half tempted to sell my shit and buy a BS3. My lauch PS2 is still going strong.

Tupac would probably have one in his pimped car, yes. And one in his pimped living room, one in his pimped walk-in freezer, and one in his pimped sauna.

So I guess this test would've made sense for him.

Well at least Dtoid doesn't have to post an article about Xbox, we already know its capabilities, yet people still buy them.

@Gameboi: I still play Guitar Hero II on my launch PS2 (okay, not exactly...bought it 12/27/00), and it works just fine. Granted, I had the infamous DRE problem years ago, but I opened up the console myself and cotton swabbed the lens with some rubbing alcohol (did the laser raising/lowering thing, too) and everything’s been just peachy ever since.

Awesome, now all Sony needs to do is really cut the price by $200-300, then release a decent library of games and I might get one!

I see what your saying. However, I have at least 100 games between my Xbox and Xbox 360 that are pretty much useless to me right now. A working console would mean quite a bit to me at the moment.

I can vouch for this test. I've played the demo for Super Rub a Dub at least twice in a 76 F cooled room. It did not give me any RROD at all.

Can we get past all the xbox = crashy fail! posts? We're aware of the problem. MS is as well. They're fixing the problem.

The PS3 is an exceptional piece of kit - quiet, cool and robust. The build quality is excellent. I think it could go on a diet but it's still a class act. i wonder why people don't talk about this aspect of the console more particularly when 360s sound like a vacuum cleaner and die like flies.

Hmmm... people still complaing about prices?

<sighs>

Yup, it's pricey, sure. More than last gen systems... but you get what you pay for... that includes all three (Wii/360/PS3). Wii is fun for the whole family, PS3 at least works and it plays PS2 games (last I checked at least), so there is that library as well, and the 360 has mucho grande current gen library but you gotta pray to the gaming gods and sacrafice a human a month that your system is not the 1 in 3 that will brick on you (if you believe the latest stats and whatnot).

Wait... what was I blabing on about again? Oh yeah, complaining about prices. Whatever, I won't be listened to anyway.

I'm impressed that Sony has finally created a hearty system. After the heating problems of the Playstation and rampant DREs of the PS2, they've finally gotten it right. And it seems that the 360 overheating problem is MS's DRE. I've always bought Nintendo systems since they are pretty much indestructible. I recently broke down and bought a PS2 since it came with a 3 year warranty for $12. I hate dealing with hardware issues, which is why I'm strictly a console gamer.

People aren't willing to pay $600 for "stability" That'd be like shelling out for mafia protection.

People are going to buy for the game selection and features.

I Concure(s?). I'm tired of hearing people complain about the same thing over and over in general (PS3 price/360 red rings/Wii having a remote that your girlfriend thinks is more fun to play with than your "remote"). It is getting quite old.

Lets look at the positives and such. Sony seems to be listening to people slowly but surely and the PS3 is looking better day by day. Microsoft is trying their best to make their product not brick as much, and the warranty + new models is showing said effort. Lastly, the Wii is fun and they will break from their constant mini-game only status with the new metroid and brawl soon enough (Sorry, can't help with the Wiimote thing that your girlfriend likes. you're on your own).

Stop pounding the negatives, and start praising and enjoying the positives, no matter what system you own.

But then again, who ever listens to me. Let the flames continue I guess.

I'm more than a little skeptical that a complex piece of electronics ran fine in a sauna for an extended period of time, isn't the full of like moisture and stuff which would have not been entirely dissimilar to throwing it in a bathtub as mentioned by someone above. :S

Not that I care, it'll be a cold day in hell before I replace my PC with another console.

@dvddesign's later post...

I believe that, trally I do. I guess I'm one of them suckers that believe the PS3 will pull through, and the features it gets to put on later will be worth it. In the past, you got a blueray player plus a system that plays games for $600, when players by themselves were $1000+. That was a great deal in my opinion, and even though I couldn't throw down $600 I knew that. Now days, players are getting cheaper but with blue doing well at the same time Sony is picking up their A game, I still believe it's a good deal all investment-like. Again, call me a sucker, stupid, fanboy, or whatever you wanna label me (though I give props to all three systems for their own rights, so fanboi may be false)... this is just what I believe.

Chuck Norris destroyed a PS3 and this story.

As for the PS3 being a discount BluRay player (if nothing more), I still think that for $600, well, maybe DVDs don't look that bad. Have any of you ever been watching a new DVD on a new TV and said "THIS LOOKS LIKE SHIT!!!!" no of course you havent because it doesnt. So, high def whatever. Maybe I'm too poor.

Where do we go from here though? What happens in another fifteen years when people start thinking to themselves "hey I'd really like to purchase my entire movie collection again in some higher format, shopping is my favourite part about new technology"... and maybe then I'll say "hey guys come on, BluRay is fine, remember? no need to upgrade" and it'll happen anyway, again.

The ps3 will more than pull through. Once Haze, Killzone, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Unreal, Warhawk, Call of Duty 4, Gta4, Infamous, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid all come out, and the price drops, and we all know it will, I bet by this time next year it will be 449 for the 80gig.

It will have a huge library of killer games and blue ray. People are over reacting. I remember when the game cube came out and sold tons of units, then 2 years later, pffffffffftttttt. nothing came out, no innovation. the system tanked. and oh yeah, the original xbox didn't fair to well either if i remember correctly. So the 360 is doing well like the game cube did at first they could still tank too.

Remember, this is a 10 year battle, and the ps3 launched last xmas. So it's only been out 8 months. Anyone calling a winner now really hasn't been around the game industry very long and man the developers know this too, because tons of people are still making a lot of games for the ps3.

ps3, 360, and wii to me are all in the same boat right now. they are all selling units. but who will have the most killer apps, and the longest life cycle? that is who will win the war.

my ps3s are never off .. if they are not playing games, they are playing movies .. if not they are folding. Ive only had one glitch/bug going from DNLA content to a game (crashes 25% of the time it seems) .. the only other bug is the occasional bluetooth disconnect ... its a very well built machine unlike the rival shitbox that was made with left over windows 98 plastic.

What is wrong with people? Jesus, imagine if people got this worked up about other stuff in America, like, I dunno, politics. We might actually get people to vote.

But I guess the dominance of someone's preferred method of playing electronic games is more important than spending the time to discuss important things like a universal health care system or the scourge of the Archadian Empire.

I find it hilarious that someone will cry about this price but will spend twice to three times that on a PC. As for the games, wtf give it as much time to develope as the 360 has had. Personally this encourages me to buy a PS3 becaues I know that I can't invest money just so it can spit 3 rings of failure at me.

L-O-fucking-L @ Lowtax. Yeah, because a PS3 and a PC are exactly the same, aren't they? Man, why did I ever buy this laptop!? I'm such a tool! I mean, it has 120GB, unlike anything else on the market, but what was I thinking?! Perfectly logical! Now, I'm going to sell my laptop and get a PS3, since they're such a goddamn bargain, and I'm going to do all that video editing and DVD burning I've been meaning to do - but this time, on my much cheaper PS3!

Sorry, the sarcasm tank was overflowing. Seriously, though, dude. Fucking dumb-as-shit comparison. You can get kickass PCs for, like, $600. Go fold yourself (at home).

YES THE DAMN THING IS A COMPUTER! i can get on the web with it too. can you do that with your 360?

how many times do i gotta say it, the ps3 is cheaper than the 360 with all the bells and whistles..

360 premium = 349
360 wifi = 100
360 hd dvd= 150
360 xbox live gold = 50
grand total = 649 plus tax.

ps3 with all of the above + 1 game, and 40 gigs more storage?
599.

PS3 IS CHEAPER!

i know people who have had their 360s repaired 4 times and still have problems.. then they go out and buy another one and then it breaks. just so they can play all the games they bought. its a joke.
