You don't say! PSPgo might get non-gaming apps photo

The rumor is that Sony is pushing devs to make smaller, non-gaming applications for your PSP and upcoming PSPgo. These apps will be less than 100mb in size, and will sell for less (we hear from two to six dollars) than your typical PlayStation Store title. This sounds like Apple's App Store, doesn't it? This also sounds a lot like a story Destructoid broke earlier this month.

When CNet asked about the closed-PSP clock app and whether we would see some other applications like that in the future, SCEA PR rep Al De Leon said that "significant reduction in the development tools for the PSP."

"The goal in that is to enable all sorts of developers to be able to develop content for the PSP," he said. "It will mostly be games, but there is certainly an opportunity to look at some non-gaming applications."

This further supports what sources have told Destructoid.

I'm all for cheap, non-gaming apps for the PSP. It's a lot of what makes up the iPhone's charm, and I'd love to see that in a game system. Let's just go light on the themed clocks and calculators -- I'm looking at you, DSiWare store.

AS long as they're better than what DSiWare has released so far, then I don't mind. But I don't want an app that only makes fart noises.

Here we go, everyone's trying to get a piece of apple's pie.

That sounded like a bad newspaper headline, sorry ;)

... it's about time! Instead of fighting the homebrew community, they should have done this from the start.

This thing is starting to look and sound so sexy. The little device is so sexy that it's almost making me forget that I hardly ever play my PSP anymore. Simply releasing a new device doesn't magically make the games that are out for it any better.

Then again, with RE: portable, GTA: Chinatown Wars, Metal Gear: Peacewalker, and the plethora of awesome PSX games not looking to stop anytime soon... is it possible that it could be a viable purchase after all?

Agh! The tough decisions in life!

So while Apple is gearing up and encouraging more and more games on their traditionally non-gaming piece of technology, Sony is encouraging more non-games on their gaming technology.

How will I ever keep work and play separate!?

Shame they didn't make that a touch screen. Could have had it that it is 'turned off' when it's slid open, then when closed it's touch active for iphone-esque applications, PDA style functions etc.
