Really Sony I'm still waiting for a $200 price point. I can go get a second blu Ray player for $98. I'm wanting the whole package obviously, but $300 is a price where I got to sit and REALLY justify it.

Oh wait, he beat me here, didn't he? Has there been a PS3 post today without that guy saying something snarky?
I'm not "teh hrdcore" so I've been trying to keep my mouth shut but with the one exception of the one guy who said his DualShock 2 can't reach his friggin' couch no one has seemed to provide any reason at all. None! Other than "I want it!"
I want it to cost $199 and come with a copy of Heavy Rain. Does that justify me to complain about it?
If that's your reason than great. Don't buy it. But why keep bringing it up?

And yeah, the lack of BC sucks, but I didn't plan on buying one anyway. I already had a PS3 once, and didn't find a single game I enjoyed besides MGS4. Oh, and Everyday Shooter. But I can live without that.
@linuxguy
Yeah my PS2 is sitting snugly beside my 360 and Wii and soon my PS3. If I were to sell it I'd be lucky to get $50. What's the big deal?
May I also note that is it just me or does the Slim look shiny up close?
1. It's the best-selling PC game of 2007.
2. Competitors (Nintendo and Microsoft) all support backwards compatability to various extents.
2. Statistically, there are more PS2 games floating around than there are Gamecube and original Xbox. This is the one console that should be backwards compatible.
3. Everything about the PS3 has gotten cheaper and easier to produce, apparently. Hence price cuts and a new model. This hasn't happened with BC technology? There are rumors of it even being done through a simple firmware update. How much would a lousy patch cost Sony? How difficult is an announcement, for Sony to say "Hey guys, get a PS3 slim! We're not adding BC with this update, but we're working on it for certain!"
I can get into more depth if that's not enough. We'll talk brand loyalty and customer validation, to which backwards compatability is a central part.
All very valid points but easily solved with one cheap purchase.
I'm not arguing Sony shouldn't have BC. What I'm arguing is why is that the focal point of so many complaints? It's such a tiny thing. I'm more concerned about overheating and shit like that than BC.

So, keep dreaming if you think they're coming out with another SKU that has the actual PS2 chipset inside. Should've gotten one at launch like I did.
The reason it's so important is because it actually existed in this machine once before, and Sony decided to do away with it. It's nice to not have to have a bunch of consoles if you can condense them, and while EVERY console is capable of software backwards compatibility, we're still not getting it. I have a B/C 80gb, but it's still a concern, looking at possible future decisions.
I think it's simply expected now. It's hard to double back on things that have become the norm. I remember when I found out that PS2 would play PSX games--that was something I'd never heard of and didn't expect, but it just made everything better. Nintendo couldn't do it that generation because they finally ditched cartridges, and Xbox was obviously brand new. But this time around, that became an industry standard.
Imagine if the PS3 only had two controllers locally. Everyone would just say "LAN up" or "Play online," but every multi-platform game with 4-player split screen would be getting the shaft. 4 is just the way it's done now.
Or think of it like this. The first cake was pretty awesome, but as soon as somebody put icing on that thing all bets were off. This is like Sony giving us a brick of spongy cake with no BC icing (albeit with other forms of icing, like free online, etc.). Maybe not the best example. Just trying to explain why BC is missed, at least by me.
And maybe I've been spoiled by PC gaming as well. It's pretty awesome to buy a brand new computer and still be able to run DOS games, or anything late '90s. Just like I don't want to keep a Windows 95 desktop around, I'd rather not keep an umpteenth console around.
In short, there are more valid reasons for BC than there are valid reasons for no BC. The question isn't "Why is it such a big deal?" but "Why is it so difficult for Sony to include after setting the standard?"
Also the cord barely reaches the couch.
I think I'm the guy you referred to who said the DS2 can't reach my couch. There are other perfectly good reasons to want BC. Like Pedro said, the desire to not have 15 consoles plugged in just so you can take advantage of your extensive game library. Also, what about the people who are buying the PS3 slim as their first ever Playstation? They will certainly wish they could play PS2 games but I doubt they'll care very much that the PS3 plays all the PS1 games.
Also, wasn't the Atari 7800 a running joke because it allowed BC for Atari 2600 games but not Atari 5200 games?
You're telling me? I had sweat running down my ass after I grinded that blue devil, but I was able to get the screw out by excessive force. Also there are tools to remove bad screws, at about 15 to 20 usd in your local tool store or whatever that is called.
The PS2 on the other hand is selling like there is no tomorrow, showing little signs of slowing down, which means it is saving Sony in terms of hardware sales. Basically PS2 units would have to drop dramatically in demand, for Sony to be convinced to add BC to PS3. They can do it, but there is way too much money to be made on PS2's.
Maybe it's me and to each his own. Personally if like I had to have two monster sized Xboxes or two awkwardly shaped Nintendo consoles I'd be peeved but, and again this is me, it's two Slims. If it were two Phats or something that'd be different too.
I guess to each his own and whatever perfects the console. I too kind of wish they had it simply because the older ones do but it's certainly no dealbreaker.
Having less wiring to play games is better if it is unavoidable
(This is my first post btw)
Still, I wish Sony could just say "We'll add BC when PS2s stop selling." Lousy businesses and their sensible money making.
If the PS2 itself is what $99? Now the PS3 is $300 i think they could afford to install BC if they really tried or wanted to even via firmware update. Isn't that what they did when they brought dual shock back? They did a firmware update so that the previous games that didn't have vibration functionality would have it. So we'll see if they think that it's a smart buisness move.
Also i got rid of my PS2 when GameStop was having this "Trade in your PS2 and get $100 off your PS3." So i got the launch 60GB which was at $600 for $500 before taxes of course lol. The PS2 i had was just about done anyway, it's DVD tray was going out and figured better upgrade before it goes caput on me lol, anyway i think the PS3 will eventually win this console war but we got to just be paitent and see what Sony cooks up in it's firmware updates.....
It's not the fact that there isn't BC that irks me, it's the fact that there was BC that functioned just fine, and then it was taken away.
If there was never any B/C to begin with, so many people would be fine with not having it now. But Sony dangled it in front of us, gave us a taste of it, and then took it away, which REALLY sucks, seeing as how the PS3 actually plays PS2 games better than the PS2 does.
The problem with your argument is that that technology is already used in Singstar where you can swap out the disks and play PS2 Singstar games on your PS3. So there's no guarantee Sony will release a firmware upgrade to allow you free BC. It's much more likely they will add PS2 games to the PS classics section of the PS store.
